The World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational has announced its military events and initiatives for the 2017 event, which is set to return to Firestone Country Club’s South Course in Akron Aug. 2 to 6.
As part of Birdies for the Brave, a national military imitative supported by the PGA TOUR, the Bridgestone Invitational will offer all National Guard, active duty, Reserve military members, military retirees and their dependents free admission to the tournament by showing a Department of Defense-issued military ID at the gate, along with a military ticket voucher.
To receive a military ticket voucher for complimentary admission or discounted tickets, military guests must register online and have their military status verified by Sheer ID.
A military ticket voucher can then be downloaded from the website. A $1 military status verification fee will apply for each military ticket voucher downloaded. Ticket vouchers can be downloaded by visiting birdiesforthebrave.sheerid.com.
Once on site at the Bridgestone Invitational, all military guests will be treated to complimentary food and beverage and a relaxing venue for viewing all of the tournament action at the United Rentals Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost, presented by Kent State University, a military-exclusive hospitality chalet located adjacent to the 14th green at Firestone Country Club.
The Outpost is scheduled to be open Aug. 3-6 from 11 a.m. until the end of play.
Additionally, the Bridgestone Invitational Military Recognition Ceremony is set to take place Aug. 5 at 9:30 a.m. in the Pennzoil Fan Zone presented by Firestone Complete Auto Care. The ceremony will feature military pageantry to honor special achievement military members from Northeast Ohio.
With nearly one month remaining until the best players in the world arrive at the Bridgestone Invitational for the final World Golf Championships event of the season, the tournament has announced the commitments of Harold Varner III, Mackenzie Hughes and Jason Dufner to the field, who all share ties to Northeast Ohio.
Varner, who won the Australian PGA Championship in December to secure his spot in the field, will be making both his tournament and World Golf Championships debut.
Through 23 events of the 2016-17 PGA TOUR Season, the Akron native has collected four top-25 finishes.
Hughes, a Kent State alum and PGA TOUR rookie, will join Varner in making his Bridgestone Invitational debut in front of a familiar crowd. The 26-year-old Canadian captured his maiden PGA TOUR victory in just his ninth career start at The RSM Classic in November.
Dufner will arrive at the Bridgestone Invitational in search of his second win of the season in the state of Ohio, having captured the Memorial Tournament, presented by Nationwide in Dublin, for his fifth career PGA TOUR victory. A Cleveland native, Dufner has two career top-10 finishes at the Bridgestone Invitational, including a T4 in 2013.
