Woodridge girls basketball grinds out win at Mogadore

The Woodridge girls basketball team is not grabbing everyone's attention as they did last year.

That may be a good thing.

The Bulldogs are 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the PTC County Division after winning Dec. 12 at Mogadore 41-37.

Head coach Chris Esterak said the team is starting to come together despite obstacles like losing sharp-shooting guard Morgan Thompson perhaps for the season.

"We are starting to learn how to pass the ball on the interiors very effectively," Esterak said. "In the Mogadore game, we got the ball to Lizzie [Wilkinson] inside and she delivered."

Wilkinson finished with 22 points, 19 of those in the second half and 16 in the final quarter as the Bulldogs overcame a 23-16 halftime deficit, outscoring the Wildcats 25-14 in the second half.

Kapri Watson had 11 points, Aamiarh Howard had six and Kara Kelleher added two points.

"I'm excited right now. We have made a lot of little mistakes, but part of that is having just two starters back and at times have three sophomores on the floor at the same time," Esterak said. "We have a learning curve to go through and we are in every game."

The Bulldogs lost two previous games. On Dec. 10 at St. Thomas Aquinas, Woodridge lost 42-40.

"We were up by three with 23 seconds left and had three turnovers. We still had a three-pointer at the buzzer that hit off the front of the rim," Esterak said. "We have not had a lot of luck with the ball bouncing our way this season."

Wilkinson finished with 15 points, Kelleher had 12, Abbe Esterak scored nine points and Watson had four.

At Southeast Dec. 8, the Bulldogs dropped a 47-42 decision to the Pirates. Esterak led the Bulldogs with 12 points, Wilkinson and Watson each had 11 points, Kelleher and Howard each chipped in with four points.

On Dec. 15, Woodridge was set to face Garrettsville, but results weren't available at press time.

The Bulldogs will host Rootstown Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.. After Christmas, the girls play at the Our Lady of the Elms Hoops4Habitat Tournament Dec. 28 and 29.
