Charlene (Sponseller) Dixson

Researched family's genealogies

Charlene (Sponseller) Dixson, 87, died Jan. 27, 2013 in Cuyahoga Falls.

She was born in Alliance on Sept. 24, 1925 and graduated from Alliance High School in June 1943 after which she became a "Rosie the Riveter" to aid in America's war effort. She spent 40 years deeply researching her and her husband's genealogies. She discovered one of her ancestors' 1700s Bible containing handwritten family records of two generations, the eldest a Revolutionary War veteran, and had the documentation published. She presented completed family group sheets to many libraries where further researchers might find them, taking each family back to their immigration to America, many families prior to the American Revolution.

She was a Brownie Scout leader when her daughters were of the proper age and her memberships through the years included Chapters in the Daughters of the American Revolution in Martinez, Calif.; Alliance and Cuyahoga Falls, with nine ancestors proven to have aided in the cause of liberty.

She also was involved with the Newcomers Clubs in Lorain, Boardman and Plymouth, Mich.; Mothers of Twins Club, Cuyahoga Falls (mid and late 1950s); Women's Clubs in Alliance, Downers Grove, Ill. and Cuyahoga Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Thelma (Nogle) Sponseller; and her husband of 52 years, Wilbur C. Dixson Jr., who died in 2002.

She is survived by her twin daughters, Susan Lee (Mrs. Brian Borrell) and Sandra Dixson; granddaughter, Kathleen Anne Borrell; brother ,Harold P. Sponseller (Barbara); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation was at the Redmon Funeral Home in Stow. Cremation has taken place; a private memorial service and burial at Fairmount Memorial Park was scheduled to take place at a later date. Memorials may be donated to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018.
