Libraries, A Place for Learning

February 26, 2008

In a recent letter in your newspaper, Mr. Schott "wonders about the future of libraries". He talks about e-books and digital books making the future of our library uncertain. I would like to think that a library is more than just the printed book on the shelf. It has been a learning place for people of all ages, a resource that anyone can go to find information of all kinds, a quiet place to study, to learn, to enrich one's mind.
Mr. Schott seems to have a vendetta against our library. He seems to spend so much time trying to prove that people don't use them anymore and that they don't read books, "40% of the US population reads one book per year." If that is true, then I am proud to be part of the 60% that read multiple books a year and not all by one author.
I have a suggestion for you Mr. Schott. Why not spend your time and energy researching ways you can help our library and its patrons, who are your neighbors and friends. Maybe you can help push that 60% of the population to 70 or 80%!!
