Northminster Presbyterian Church

Northminster Presbyterian Church, 104 W. Portage Trail Extension, has participated for several years in the national program which collects dollars for the hungry on the Sunday of the National Football League Super Bowl. Northminster will again participate Feb. 3.

In 1990, Brad Smith, then a seminary intern, prayed a simple prayer: that people be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat. He figured why not use Super Bowl Sunday as a time to collect dollars for those who are hungry?

On Super Bowl Sunday, Sunday School children will collect money in soup pots as the Northminster congregation exist and the proceeds will benefit, "Feed My Sheep," a Friday soup kitchen located at Redeemer Methodist Church on North Hill in Akron, where several Northminster members volunteer.

Northminster will kick off its 2008 All You Can Eat spaghetti dinners Feb. 8. An Alfredo sauce will be available, as well as extra meaty and marinara sauce. The cost will be $7, which includes spaghetti, salad, pie, bread and a drink. Dinner will be served on the following Fridays: Feb. 8, March 14, April 11 and May 9 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Northminster sponsors a non-denominational Christian youth club, the Pioneers, which gathers at 6 p.m. Thursdays for fun, learning, crafts, music and snacks. Kirk Bruce, Pilgrim's Pastor, will provide Sunday's 10:30 a.m. worship service message. Following every worship service a social hour takes place downstairs in the social hall where coffee and refreshments are served. Pilgrim welcomes everyone to attend the worship services or other activities.

Sundays at 9:30 a.m. children may attend L.I.G.H.T., Learning in God's House Together. On Jan. 27, the children will continue their study of Mark 2:1-12. Mark tells of the paralyzed man who was brought on a stretcher by his friends to be healed by Jesus. They were unable to get the man in through the door so they lowered him down from the roof. This account reveals Jesus's authority to forgive sins and to heal the sick. The children will be discussing; is it hard work to carry friends, would they be willing to use that energy to bring a friend in need to church, and how can faith in God help other people? They will also be able to physically see the strength needed to do what the men in Mark did by participating in stretcher games and challenges.

At the 9:30 hour on Sunday mornings adults have two choices of ways to study God's words. Conversation and coffee are offered in the Pilgrim Library or adults may go to the Heritage Room for coffee and quiet meditation.
