Trick? or Treat?

October 28, 2007

Who doesn't have a nostalgic childhood memory of running door-to-door in makeshift costumes shouting "Trick or Treat"? It has always been a rite of passage to participate. So why are so many of those participating now adults?! As always, I was prepared for all the little ones in costume. I purchased several bags of candy. I turned on the spooky music and fipped on the porch light. At first there were many little ones as expected. I don't mind the carloads that come. I assume they don't have a safe neighborhood where they can trick-or-treat. I don't mind the young teenagers. They shouldn't grow up too fast. I will gladly give them my candy. But next year, I will be turning my porch light off early. I had adults, well over 20 years old trick-or-treat at my door! One couple had a new born baby in a stroller and each of them carried a treat bag! When they held out their bags, I asked them: "Are you trick or treating for the baby?" They said the candy was for them. I suggested the baby was way too young for candy and they were much too old! They walked away laughing and continued up the road. Many of the kids who came were without costumes. There were few "thank yous" and even less said "trick-or-treat". I will certainly spend much less money on candy next year. You can count me out!
