Automated Checkout at Bolich??

May 16, 2007

Good evening,

Today I received a letter from Bolich Middle School stating that the cafeteria was changing to a computerized checkout system for my daughter's cafeteria. Does this not seem a little extreme?
Did we just not pass a levy for our schools? Is this what we can look forward to?
A non-essential frill that makes our lunch ladies' job a little easier and moves kids through the line faster?
I think this is just a total waste of our money! How about adding or re-instating programs for our children with that money? Heaven forbid our teachers get raises or better supplies or better text books. Our education system is on the downslide enough in this country, we should be pouring our money into more ways to help our children learn.
Our kids come home three or four times a year with the fundraiser sheets to milk us(the parents) for more money for our schools. Perhaps we can take away just one magazine fundraiser and use the same money that we are dumping into a computerized checkout system for something more usefull to our children.
The benifits stated in the letter are a joke. The first bullet point states that Parents may deposit money in the account rather than be concerned with giving the children exact change every morning. Yes that does sound nice, however, for the amount of money Im sure this system is costing us. Are we becoming so detached from our kids that we can't take some time to give them some money in the morning, is that now becoming a burden?
I will gladly take a few moments each morning to dish out my daughters lunch money, like I have been, like my parents did for me , and their parents did for them!!
They also say the lines will move faster leaving more time to enjoy their lunch period. Again, nice idea, except that the system is set up to where the kids must remember the PIN and student ID numbers to enter. Do we really think the majority of the kids will remember this? I highly doubt it, thus making the line move slower, making kids late for next period making for more detentions.
I am all for progress, really I am, but let's spend our money better. Let's spend it on somthing that will help our children learn and shape our world.
