School Board disputes and our school levy

April 15, 2007

It was very disheartening to read the recent Beacon Journal article about our school board's decision to discount and destroy it's own performance evaluation of our superintendent. This is not the kind of publicity that this school district needs when they are hoping to pass a school levy on May 8th. If it is the school board's responsibility to evaluate the superintendent's job performance, then those evaluations should be completed with thought and honesty. Not everyone sees things the same way. The fact that there was such a discrepancy among the evaluations should be a red flag that there is a problem in our school board. It should not, however, make the evaluations invalid.

Our current school board has not agreed on much since they were elected, so it does not surprise me that they don't agree on the job performance of our superintendent. I just hope that our kids are not the ones who pay the price. Our kids, schools, and community need the school levy to be renewed (this is not a new tax levy) in order to stay strong. I hope that this communtiy can put aside the negative publicity that has been generated by our school board when they vote on May 8th.
