by Susan Jenior Correspondent Peninsula -- A two-time first team All-County Division senior, a foreign-exchange student and a fifth-man score was the winning combination for the Woodridge boys golf team. Bas they remained the only undefeated golf team in the Portage Trail Conference by defeating Rootstown 153-161 Aug. 31 at Brandywine Golf Course. Brandon Shannon is the two-time All-County Division standout, and he led his team to victory with a 1-under 35 at Brandywine. Even the efforts of reigning Player of the Year Nevada Lemon of Rootstown, who carded an even-par 36, didn't phase the Bulldogs. Alongside Shannon, the Bulldogs received a 39 from Josh Kane in the fifth-man spot, a 37 from Colin Westphal and a 42 from Tomas Kebort. Kebort, competing in his first match for the Bulldogs after being cleared by the OHSAA for competition, is a senior foreign-exchange student attending Woodridge this season from the Czech Republic. "It was a good night," said Woodridge coach Dave Krusinski. "Brandon is one of those kids you want to keep on your team forever. "[Rovers coach] Keith Waesch and his program has been the class of the league for years, and we were just happy to compete with them tonight," Krusinski said. For the Rovers, the loss was disappointing, but not devastating. "I told my kids that we didn't lose the match because we played poorly," said Waesch. "The Woodridge kids just stepped up and were determined not to lose on their home course." "I can live with coming up short when the opposition fires those types of scores," Waesch said. The Rovers Michael Rotilie fired a 39, with Michael Jaros (42) and Josh Richards (44) completing the top four for Rootstown. E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113 Comments
