Vinisha Mittal, Sydney Myers and Jen Pung, ninth graders at Woodridge High School, recently spent a day at Northeast Ohio College of Medicine and Pharmacy hearing about medical careers and educational opportunities, as well as a day at Summa Health System shadowing health care professionals. The annual event is a follow-up opportunity for selected girls who attended last fall's Diane Burbick Math and Science Conference for Middle School Girls, which is sponsored by the Summa Compact Partnership. The day's events at NEOUCOM were a collaborative venture among the medical and pharmacy school, Summa Health System and the Area Health Education Center, headquartered at NEOUCOM. The students heard presentations about neurobiology from Megan Storey-Workley, tools of the trade from Janet Raber, physiology from Cheryl Hodnichak and Patricia Shamhart, as well as clinical skills assessment from Howard Gregory. They took part in a simulated pharmacy experience presented by Dr. Dale English II. At Summa, the 12 participants from Compact schools observed personnel in Obstetrics, Pathology, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Medical Engineering and Nursing. The Diane Burbick Conference offers middle school girls and their parents a look at opportunities and career options for women in math and science. The Six District Educational Compact, which serves the communities of Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Kent, Stow-Munroe Falls, Tallmadge and Woodridge school districts, provides career programs, services and resources such as the Summa Compact Partnership for these six school districts. Summa Health System brings Akron City Hospital, St. Thomas Hospital, Western Reserve Hospital and others, as well as an affiliation with NEOUCOM to the joint venture. Comments
