Two business teachers from Cuyahoga Falls High School spent two weeks of their summer vacation learning about insurance, risk management, and personal finance at the Insurance Education Institute at St. John's University in New York City. The graduate course focused on teaching financial literacy to high school students. Beth Hulme and Yvonne Federonick were accepted into the nationwide program last January. The two business teachers then flew to New York City on July 11 and attended classes through July 23. The course is sponsored through The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, education organization, founded to promote the study and teaching of risk management and insurance (RMI). The Griffith Foundation is committed to improving financial literacy in the United States, especially in the area of risk management and insurance. They provide education opportunities and resources to K-12 teachers free of charge. Through a series of university-based Institutes, the Foundation now offers high school and middle school teachers graduate-level professional development, curriculum and teaching resources to help them introduce their students to the basic principles of risk management and insurance. Beth and Yvonne were among 38 educators from around the country attending the program. Comments
