This isn't your grandpa's library

In some ways, going back to school on Aug. 24 was pretty much the same for students at Bolich Middle School as it was for their parents and even their grandparents.

At first glance, today's classrooms look much like they did in 1990 and in 1970. Visitors will see desks and chalkboards and bulletin boards covered with math facts, photos of U.S. presidents, and rules of grammar.

Look again.

SMART Boards have replaced overhead projectors. Progress Book has replaced the teacher's grade book. E-books are finding their way into language arts classrooms.

Two things that have changed a lot since mom and grandpa attended Bolich Middle School are the library and the role of the librarian.

Entering Bolich's library, the first thing visitors will see is the computer lab. Students use computers to access the library's web-based catalog and do research using a variety of academic websites. They prepare their reports and presentations using Microsoft Word and Power Point and check their grades and assignments on Progress Book.

The role of the school librarian continues to change. In addition to the traditional jobs of selecting, cataloging, and processing new books, today's librarian teaches students how to insert images into their Power Point presentations and create bulleted lists in their Word documents. She publishes the library's website and alerts the school community to new books via Twitter where students can tweet about books they have read.

Albert Einstein said, "Know where to find the information and how to use it -- That's the secret of success." Using print and electronic resources, students at Bolich Middle School are learning how to find the information they need for their academic achievement, lifelong learning and leisure pursuits.

Parents are invited to visit the library during Bolich's open house on Sept. 2 or via the library's website at bolichlibrary.org.
