HELEN STEINBRUNNER CERNAN (NEE ZAKICH)

Great-grandmother of 11

Helen Steinbrunner Cernan (nee Zakich) died on Aug. 7, 2010, following a stroke.

She was born Jan. 29, 1923 to John and Dana Zakich in Akron, where she lived most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Michael Cernan, brother and sister-in-law Louie (Mary) Zakich, sister and brother-in-law Mildred "Meka" (Bill) Koontz and brother and sister who died in infancy, Milan and Violet.

Mrs. Cernan had a 45-year secretarial career, the last 22 years with Evans Savings (now KeyBank) as executive secretary to the president, a job that she loved.

Following her retirement in 1982, she married Mike Cernan, a well-known orchardist in Hinckley Township. Together they operated Pleasantdale Fruit Farm until Mr. Cernan's death in 1992.

She is survived by her children, daughter and caregiver, Rosie (Alan) Finkel with whom she made her home, son John (Ann) Steinbrunner, daughter-in-law Sandra (husband Bill Munroe) Coyle, brother Dan (Rhea) Zakich of California, and two nephews Darin (Maria) Zakich and Dean Zakich, also of California. Also surviving are her grandchildren Lisa Marie (George Lenhart) Dixon, Jimmy (Joannie) Leonti both of Cuyahoga Falls, MaryEllen "Mel" (Rey) Cruz of New York, Brian Finkel of Columbus, and J.C. Steinbrunner, Adam (Ellen) Steinbrunner, and Drew (Edyta) Steinbrunner, all of Chicago. She leaves 11 great-grandchildren and two kittens.

Honoring her request, there were no services.

Cremation has taken place.

If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to the Hospice Care Center or to the ASPCA.

Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
