Cuyahoga Falls -- What will Cuyahoga Falls schools of the future look like?

In the coming months, Superintendent Dr. Edwin S. Holland will be forming a committee to address future planning, facilities-wise, for the school district. Holland said he hopes to involve "key stakeholders from the community," including parents, business people and school staff members. The superintendent said he hopes to have the panel in place by November or December to start considering options.

"Our buildings are not going last another 40, 50 years," Holland said, "so we should start planning because it will take three to four years to get a plan in place."

The timing is right to begin weighing whether to build new schools or remodel old ones in light of new community development initiatives by the city and local developers, the superintendent added.

According to Len DeChant, director of business and operations, the original part of Falls High is its oldest building and Roberts Middle School and DeWitt Elementary School, which were constructed in 1968, are its youngest.

Financial assistance for constructing, renovating or rehabilitating buildings can be requested through the Ohio School Facility Commission. The eligibility ranking list dated November 2009 has Cuyahoga Falls at 475 of 612 school districts in the state. The district's local share of any construction project under OSFC's program would be 78 percent and the state would fund 22 percent.
