The Cystic Fibrosis golf tourney is Sept. 13

The Leo J Jacob Golf Classic takes place Sept. 13 at Silver Lake Country Club. The event will celebrate its seventh year and has raised more than $200,000 since its inception.

In May 2004, the "CF Open" was renamed in honor of Leo, a past participant in that event and area resident, who lost his battle with cystic fibrosis (CF) that year. Throughout his 44-year battle with CF and despite a difficult lung transplant, Leo remained an avid golfer and a strong advocate for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This tournament gives golfers the opportunity to "Go the Distance" and play 36 holes of golf -- or 18 holes, with no cost difference.

For those golfing 36 holes, there is a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start. For others, registration, a putting contest and time at the driving range begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch and a shotgun start for all golfers at 1 p.m. Dinner, cocktails, a program and awards take place in the evening immediately following play.

Proceeds from all aspects of the tournament including sponsorships, golf registration and the event's games and auctions will help fund research that works to enhance the quality and quantity of life of those affected by the disease. The tournament's goal has been and will continue to be the pursuit of a cure for cystic fibrosis.
