The American Red Cross, in partnership with Summa Western Reserve Hospital, will host a special "Rumble at the Reserve" blood drive on Aug. 27 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The drive will take place at Summa Western Reserve Hospital, 1900 23rd St. All who come to donate blood will enjoy special refreshments; receive a free T-shirt from Summa Western Reserve Hospital and be automatically entered for a chance to win concert tickets, sporting event tickets or Summa Western Reserve Hospital specialty items. Also, when people donate blood now through Sept. 6, they'll be automatically entered for a chance to win a 2010 Nissan Versa 1.8 Sedan, courtesy of Mentor Nissan by Sunnyside or one of four $500 gas gift cards. This blood drive competition is a friendly battle between the Department of Medicine and the Department of Surgery at Summa Western Reserve Hospital. The challenge is to see who can bring in the most blood donations for the day and win a victory for their department. Appointments are recommended for this blood drive. Visit redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code 'summa' to schedule. The summer months can be a challenging collection time for the Northern Ohio Region as donors become busy with travel and other activities and may neglect to donate. Blood transfusions are used every day for trauma victims, organ transplants, women with complications during childbirth, newborns and premature babies and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer and other diseases. And while the need is great, of the eligible blood donor population, which is 38 percent, only a small percentage donate on a regular basis. To schedule an appointment to donate call 1-800-Red Cross (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Bring a Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID. Comments
