I would like to second the letter of July 18 ("Hopes chief will be hired from within"). I also hope that we choose a police chief candidate for Silver Lake from within. I agree with all of the letter's points and would add these:
1. Hiring from within is good for our economy and for Silver Lake. A candidate from within will be pleased with a reasonable salary and pay full taxes.
2. We would then be able to hire another police person who will also pay taxes and appreciate this great opportunity.
3. Hiring a retired Ohio police official condones "double dipping." There's been too much of that.
4. Hiring someone who has already been in a position of authority welcomes the attitude of "I'm great, don't question my decisions." Our Council and mayor are not effective with dealing with strong personalities.
5. It's just the right thing to do. The new chief (from within) will appreciate his job and will care more about serving us appropriately.
