by Ellin Walsh Reporter Silver Lake --The activity of the village police department has been "very consistent" dating back to 2005, although the nature of the offenses reported has changed, according to Chief Gary W. DeMoss. "The changes that I see are the specific types of crimes that are being reported," DeMoss said, "such as identity and financial theft cases which are very serious in nature and much more complex to investigate." DeMoss submitted his final annual report for his department recently; he plans to retire at the end of this year after 17 years at the helm of the Silver Lake Police. The village police department boasts eight full-time officers, four part-time officers and six auxiliary or reserve officers. According to DeMoss, less serious crime is on the increase, including cases of roving groups of individuals stealing money and property from unlocked vehicles. "No community is exempt from this type of crime," DeMoss said. A more serious level of juvenile activity also has been recorded, the chief said, with drug and alcohol arrests and thefts of property up. Curfew and trespass cases, he said, are consistent with previous years. During 2009 the police department budget was reduced by $60,000 from the 2008 budget of $833,189. "We did not replace a cruiser in 2009," DeMoss said, "and we reduced our patrol mileage overall by 20 percent." Officers continued to adhere to the policy of shutting off idling police cruisers whenever possible, the chief said. In 2008, the village of Silver Lake contracted with the city of Cuyahoga Falls for fire, EMS and rescue response. Throughout most of 2009, village police were fine-tuning that transition, according to the chief. "I'm pleased to report the transition is complete and successful, thanks to a lot of help by dedicated personnel from Cuyahoga Falls," DeMoss said, adding, "That is the event that stands out for me in 2009."
