The Rev. Marvin Brown, Senior Minister of First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls for the past nine years, is retiring after 33 years in the ministry and will preach his last sermon at First Church at the 10:30 a.m. service on June 27. After the service there will be an ice cream social reception for him and his wife Sandy on the church lawn. A retirement picnic dinner took place for him and his family on June 6. The Rev. Brown was born in Williamsburg, Va., later moving to Virginia Beach. He attended Louisburg Jr. College, University of Richmond and University of Akron. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Methodist Theological School in Delaware, and also studied at Ashland Theological Seminary. Besides serving at First Church he served churches in Galion, Braceville (Warren), Canton, and Chardon. He is married to Falls native, the former Sandra Hollingshead, and they have two daughters, Christine and Cheryl. Asked about his time in ministry the Rev. Brown said, "It has been a privilege to share in this special life of ministry within the United Methodist Church. I have been with persons as they entered life, watched them grow up, performed their weddings and baptized their children. "Sandy and I have developed and worked with youth groups. I have shared with families experiencing heartache and celebrated with them in their joys and successes. I have often said it is a wonderful thing to get up each morning and enter the world doing the thing you feel called to do. "Sandy and I look forward to discretionary time to do things we have not been able to do because of years of busy weekends. We will have time to spend with our grandchildren and do some traveling to places we have longed to visit." First Church members on their Administrative Council recently voted to honor Rev. Brown's service to the church with the title of Senior Minister Emeritus. Comments
