Woman charged with felony theft of elderly allegedly got $16,000

Cuyahoga Falls -- A 24-year-old Falls woman was arrested and charged with felony theft from the elderly on June 10 after police say she scammed a Leavitt Avenue couple into giving her more than $16,000.

The man and wife, 74 and 78, reported the woman, whom they knew, told them she needed money for court fees. The couple gave the woman money at three different times in the last two months, police said. The couple later found out her story wasn't true.

The couple has not yet gotten their money back, according to police.

Disorderly conduct

June 13 -- Man arrested. A 40-year-old Ashland Avenue resident was arrested at his home shortly after 1 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct by intoxication after he was involved in offensive conduct, the report said.

June 11 -- Fighting females. Two Akron women, 18 and 22, were arrested at Riverfront Parkway and Front Street around 9:30 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct because they were fighting, police said.

June 10 -- Hung out to dry. A 44-year-old Falls man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct by intoxication after he was found drunk and passed out in an apartment complex's laundry room in the 2200 block of Winter Parkway at 2 a.m., police said. Officers also charged him with drug abuse after they found a bag of suspected marijuana in his sock.

Breaking and entering

June 11 -- Laptop taken. A resident of the 1900 block of 19th Street reported someone entered her unlocked apartment which she had just moved out of and stole a laptop computer between 1:29 and 1:55 p.m. The computer, one of the last things left in the apartment, was valued at $1,000.

Domestic violence

June 11 -- Stepmother arrested. A 39-year-old Falls woman was arrested and charged with domestic violence at 9:25 a.m. at her home after her stepson said she grabbed him by the neck, choked him and scratched his neck. The stepson did not seek medical attention, the report said.

June 10 -- Boyfriend arrested. A 28-year-old Falls man was arrested at his home at 4 p.m. and charged with domestic violence after his live-in girlfriend told police a verbal altercation between the two of them turned physical and he grabbed her face and grabbed her arms. The report said she had bruises on her arms and a half-inch laceration on her thumb. She did not receive medical attention, police said.

Burglary

June 10 -- Cash stolen. A resident of the 2600 block of Overlook Road reported someone entered her unlocked home and stole $80 in cash from her purse on the kitchen table between 3 and 10:20 p.m.

Accident

June 14 -- Injury accident. A 56-year-old Falls woman was transported to Akron City Hospital after a two-car crash on Portage Trail at 12:10 p.m. According to the report, the woman was traveling east on West Portage Trail when she failed to stop for a vehicle that was stopped to turn left onto State Road. The driver of the other vehicle, a 28-year-old Falls woman, was not injured. The 56-year-old woman was listed in satisfactory condition June 17, according to a hospital spokesman. The 56-year-old woman was cited for assured clear distance.

Car fires

June 12 -- Smoke inside. Crews responded to a car fire at 7 p.m. on the city's north side. A 51-year-old Akron man told police he was driving his 2000 Ford Crown Victoria eastbound on West Steels Corners Road east of Northampton Road when he began to see smoke coming from the back seat. He turned around in an attempt to make it to the next intersection, police said. The fire caused severe damage to the car. The man was not hurt.

June 8 -- Flames spotted. A 34-year-old Akron man said he was parking his 1997 Ford Aerostar van along the curb in the 1100 block of Saxe Avenue and saw smoke and flames coming from underneath the car. He said when he had applied the brake, the pedal went to the floor. The man was not hurt, however the van had severe damage. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
