by Steve Wiandt Reporter Cuyahoga Falls -- Two rangers avoided serious injury after a man they witnessed breaking into a car threw a rock at one of them and tried to run them both over with his car in a county park. On May 16 around 7:30 p.m., two Metro Parks rangers stopped a smash-and-grab in progress in the parking lot of Gorge Metro Park, 1160 Front St., according to Nathan Eppink, spokesman for Metro Parks Serving Summit County. After hearing a loud "smashing" noise, the rangers saw a man standing behind a Chrysler PT Cruiser, Eppink said. The man was holding a large pipe wrench in one hand and a large rock in the other. The back window of the vehicle had been broken out. The rangers identified themselves and repeatedly told the suspect to stop. The suspect threw the rock at one ranger, Eppink said, hitting him in the leg. The man then got into an early to mid-1990s Honda or Nissan white four-door car with temporary tags. Eppink said the suspect attempted to hit both rangers with his car. In the process, one ranger drew his weapon and fired one shot at close range in an attempt to disable the car, he said. The shot hit the rear driver's side of the vehicle, but the suspect didn't stop and drove away on Front Street toward Akron. Falls Police helped secure the scene and the rangers were checked out by Falls EMS. The ranger who was hit by the rock was later treated at St. Thomas Hospital. The incident remains under investigation by the Metro Parks rangers, Eppink said. E-mail: swiandt@recordpub.com Phone: 330-686-3915 Comments
