Octogenarian loses nearly $3,000 to wire scam

Cuyahoga Falls -- A 82-year-old Falls man reported he lost $2,915 to someone who claimed to be his grandson. Police say someone called the man and conned him into wiring the money to Kent, England on April 28. Western Union caught onto the scam the next day, police said, and prevented the man from wiring an additional $2,500.

Breaking and entering

May 2 -- Shop robbed. The owner of a beauty salon in the 1600 block of Schiller Avenue reported someone entered her locked shop by unknown means and took $441 in cash and checks between 4 p.m. May 1 and 1 p.m. May 2.

Theft

April 30 -- Tree taken. A Falls resident reported someone took a 4-foot tall Japanese maple tree worth $100 from his property on Van Doren Drive between 2 p.m. April 28 and 2 p.m. April 29.

April 27 -- Rabbit robbery. A resident of the 2300 block of 21st Street reported someone took from his front yard a bunny statue valued at $35 between 8:50 a.m. April 23 and 9:05 a.m. April 27.

Dog at large

April 29 -- Large dog. A 31-year-old Falls woman was cited for violating the city's dogs and other animals running at large ordinance after another Falls woman said the 105-pound male Rotweiler dog jumped on her dog while she was walking it at Valley Road and 25th Street. The Rotweiler was caught and secured by its owner.

A city ordinance prevents dog owners from letting their animal run at large in public, on unenclosed lands, or on someone else's property.

Forgery

April 28 -- Suspect arrested. A 36-year-old Cleveland man was arrested and charged with forgery after an employee of a check cashing store in the 600 block of Howe Avenue reported the suspect tried to cash a counterfeit check for $4,235 at 7:30 p.m.

Criminal damaging

April 28 -- Windows broken. The owner of business property in the 4100 block of Wyoga Lake Road reported finding three broken windows in his building. Loss was $1,200.
