United Presbyterian Church The theme for the worship services for 2010 is: "Experiencing the Living God: Knowing His Will - Living Your Purpose." The message this week: "God Still Speaks," drawing from Jesus' words in John 10 where He says that His people hear His voice. The Traditional Service starts at 8:30 a.m. and the New Creation Contemporary Service starts at 11 a.m. The Educational Hour, including "Amazement Park" for elementary school age children, is from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Childcare for babies and toddlers is available throughout the Sunday morning activities. Parking is available on church property. All are welcome. On March 14, from 7-8 p.m., the U.P.C. Youth Groups will meet at the church for both Middle School and High School groups. U.P.C. is participating in an inter-church bowling league at Tallmadge Lanes, Monday evenings, beginning at 6:45 p.m. PrayerLab will meet March 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. PrayerLab is a ministry that focuses in on participants' prayer needs and helps participants grow in effective prayer. Wednesday Night ALIVE!, March 17, from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. is a family-oriented program that offers spiritual growth opportunities for all ages. A family style dinner is included. On March 18, D.M.A. (Don't Mention Age), a social group for senior citizens will meet in the Fellowship Hall for lunch beginning at 12 noon and followed by a program at 1 p.m. This month's program will be the "Deerfield Dandies - A Kitchen Band." On March 19, members and friends of U.P.C. have the opportunity to work with Springtime of Hope, a ministry to the homeless at St. Bernard's in Akron. The resource the men are using this year is: "Man Does Not Live By Sports Alone" by Dennis Swanberg. The topic will be "Playing Two," about keeping God in your day, all day. Grandview United Methodist Church Grandview United Methodist Church, 2315 Phelps Ave., invites neighbors and friends to spend some time in worship with the congregation during this Lenten season. Lent is a time of preparation for Easter, which is the celebration of Jesus' resurrection. During this time of preparation, some people fast or give up something important to them. Some people spend time in study, devotions and prayer. Others cut back on their social activities and give service to the community. The congregation invites the community to join them for its monthly program, "Faith Through the Movies" on March 21 at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The congregation will view the 2008 movie "Henry Poole Is Here" starring Luke Wilson. Redeemer Lutheran Church During Lent, Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2141 Fifth St., will have Wednesday services starting at 7. Each week the church will be visited by a person who played a role in the final days of Christ's life. Nicodemus, Barabbas, Pilate, the Thief's Father, Judas, and Mary will each visit during the Lenten season. Northminster Presbyterian Church Northminster Presbyterian Church, 104 W. Portage Trail Extension, invites community members to join the congregation during the Lenten Season by attending the Bread and Broth Series and Study, each Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The study will conclude March 24. The evenings will begin with a light supper (bread and broth), followed by a study led by the Rev. Stephanie Crossland with a discussion format. Each study will focus on one person around Jesus' ministry at the time of His death. During the Lenten Season, the Rev. Crossland will focus her worship themes around "Faces Around the Cross" at each 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning worship service, including "The Woman Who Washed Jesus' Feet," "Judas Iscariot," "Pontius Pilate" and "Servant Girl from Caiaphas' House." The Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Communion Service will take place on April 1, with the Rev. Crossland speaking on "Faces Around the Cross -- Ours." On Easter Sunday, the morning worship service will focus on "Faces Around the Cross -- Mary Magdalene." The Northminster Book Club continues to meet on the third Monday of each month at 1:15 p.m. in the church lounge. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to come to the next meeting March 15. The Northminster Craft Guild meets every third Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Their next meetings will be March 17 and 20. Come to one or come to both, and bring your current project and a sack lunch. The second Sunday of each month is the church's "Good Neighbors Sunday," where the church tries to fill its grocery cart with non-perishable food items and brown grocery bags. First United Methodist Church Come to a Community Easter Egg Hunt, lunch and party for children and adults sponsored by First United Methodist Church on March 27 at Galt Park beginning at 11 a.m. There will be an egg hunt for toddlers and children through sixth grade beginning at 11:15 sharp, as well as a story, games and a craft. There is also an opportunity for kids in middle and high school to ride the church bus back to the church to take part in a dodge ball tournament. There will also be something for the adults and a lunch for all at noon that includes hot dogs, chips, baked beans, drinks, cookies and brownies. First Church is collecting infant onesies, sweaters and receiving blankets to send to Haiti where they are desperately needed. To donate any of these items, new or nearly new, bring them to the church office, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Women of the church have been busy cutting and sewing children's clothes to send to Haiti. First Church members have contributed more than $8,200 to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief.) Members have also sent 237 health kits to Haiti as well as contributing toward the purchase of toothpaste and shipping of the kits. Project Linus meets on March 20 at First Church in Room 105 at 10:30 a.m. The group welcomes anyone who would like to make blankets for the children at Akron Children's Hospital. Blankets may be knitted, crocheted, sewn, quilted for made from fleece and must be 30 inches by 36 inches or larger. If you have blankets or material for blankets, bring them to the meeting. Bethany United Church of Christ Bethany United Church of Christ invites the community to join the congregation in worship Sundays at 8:30 or 10:30 a.m. with Church School for all ages at 9:15 a.m. During Lent the church offers a variety of worship opportunities. Join the congregation March 17 at 6:30 p.m. for soup/bread and the study, "The Breadth of God's Grace." During the month of March, the Mission Committee will be supporting the Harvest for Hunger Food Drive to benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Every Sunday morning in March, bring as many canned and dry goods as you can to donate. Bethany Kitchen provides a free luncheon for those in the community who need a meal. Help is always needed for food preparation, serving and cleaning up. Bethany United Church of Christ is located at 1235 Broad Blvd. Peninsula United Methodist Church Peninsula United Methodist Church located at 1575 Main St., Peninsula, will host peirogie and fish lunches and dinners every Friday through March 26. Lunches are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinners are 5-7 p.m. The menu includes four pierogies, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $7.50; two generous pieces of batter-fried fish, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $7.50; mixed: two pierogies and one piece of baked or batter-fried fish, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $7.50. Pierogie choices are: potato and cheese, potato and onion, sauerkraut, apple pie and the featured flavor of the week. Additional Pierogies are $1.25 each and additional pieces of fish are $2.25 each. Also available will be onions in butter for the pierogies and tarter sauce for the fish. Kid's meal: two Pierogies or one fish, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $5. Take-outs are welcome. St. John's Episcopal Church Books will fill the undercroft at St. John's on March 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking across the street is available. The Lenten Study Group studying Jonah has started to include a light supper starting at 6 p.m. The study group continues at 6:30 p.m. each evening. The Double T Quilt Club will not meet in the church this month. It will meet at Kent State Fashion Museum on March 17 at 6:30 p.m. The Akron Coin Club meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. (Learning in God's House Together) has been studying the Parable of the Sower (we have "growing-green things" in the classroom!) as they learn how to be good listeners and doers of God's word. During Lent they will learn about Esther in the computer lab, discover some signs and symbols of Lent, and work on the Palm Sunday Pageant for March 28. Come join the fun as participants learn the Lord's Prayer in sign language. Community members can place their order for several tasty items available on the Honey Baked Ham order form at Pilgrim Church. All orders are due by March 28. All ordered items will be available for pick up at the church between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on April 3. No standing in line at the Honey Baked Ham Store to pick up the order. Mission Trip Fund receives 15 percent of the total proceeds. Those interested in ordering should place an order early. March 21 is the last day donations will be accepted for the seventh annual teddy bear drive. First United Methodist Church of Akron The Men's Club of First United Methodist Church of Akron is sponsoring a Lenten fish fry March 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be fried fish or baked cod, baked chicken breast, potatoes (baked or steak fries), cole slaw, cake and beverage. The price is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 3 to 12. University of Akron students with current ID are free.
