Cuyahoga Falls --An early morning blaze on the city's southeast side March 4 has been ruled "unintentional," according to a fire marshal.

A child playing with a cigarette lighter appears to have sparked the fire at 1724 Fourth St., Deputy Fire Marshal Lt. Tim Mier says.

"It appears one of the 4-year-old children -- boy/girl twins -- was playing with a cigarette lighter in the basement," according to Mier.

Mier estimates damages at $80,000 on the property and $20,000 on its contents.

Firefighters were called at 1:21 a.m. after a resident of the home reported being "awakened to smoke," Mier says. Six people were home at the time, Mier said, four adults and two juveniles. All six escaped unharmed.

The fire was under control within 40 minutes of being reported. A Falls firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, treated and released, according to the fire department. The fire department does not release names of injured employees, according to its chief, Paul Moledor.

Firefighters from Akron, Bath, Hudson and Stow assisted their Cuyahoga Falls colleagues in extinguishing the blaze.

An account has been established at Valley Savings Bank to benefit the fire victims in the name of Rose Whitcomb. Donations may be made at either location: 140 Portage Trail or 505 Graham Road.
