The Employee Foundation Council at Akron Children's Hospital presented David Andrews, MD, chairman of the department of Surgery at Akron Children's Hospital, with its 2009 Distinguished Service Award.

The EFC Distinguished Service Award was established in 1979 to recognize the contributions of hospital executive Roger Sherman, and has since been awarded every year to an employee who demonstrates exemplary leadership, loyalty, dedication and service. Honorees are nominated by fellow employees and voted upon by EFC.

Dr. Andrews and his wife, Rose, have four children and reside in Silver Lake.

Dr. Andrews, a pediatric general and thoracic surgeon, also serves as medical director of the Akron Children's Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute. He joined Akron Children's surgical team in 1991.

In nominating Dr. Andrews for the award, fellow Akron Children's employees noted Dr. Andrews' devotion to patient care, kindness toward co-workers, and commitment to further developing the surgery program at Akron Children's. In recent months, he has been leading the effort to establish a pediatric surgery fellowship program at Akron Children's, recognizing the importance of medical education in his specialty.

"I think it's important to take the time to talk to children, even babies, to put them at ease before surgery," said Dr. Andrews. "Taking that time -- whether singing a silly song or joining in on their play -- can really make a difference in establishing rapport and making a child feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation."

Dr. Andrews attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals. His training then continued with a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals and a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle.
