March is the most frustrating of all the months. Spring is definitely near, but yet much of the area's weather is still so volatile and changeable that outdoor activity seems so far away. Over the course of the last week, though, the sun made some brilliant appearances, so I am optimistic.

As you, too, cope with the anxiousness that comes your way every spring, it might help you to start thinking about how you'll spend your leisure time this year. Parks and Recreation can help you with those decisions. We know that everything costs more than ever before, and as our economy causes our residents to tighten their purse strings, we need to reinforce to folks that despite a trying economy, we still need recreation in our lives. You may not be planning that traditional vacation this year, but I believe we have some viable alternatives to offer and ones that are close to home. Our proof of that statement lies in Parks and Recreation facilities that received top honors this year in the 2009 Beacon's Best Awards. We thank the voters who made us #1 in the following categories:

* The Natatorium - Top Ten Workout Places

* Water Works Family Aquatic Center - #1 Best Place to Swim

* Brookledge Golf Club - #1 Golf Course

* Downview Sports Center - #1 Miniature Golf Course

Purchase a Summerpac for $59, and you will receive four individual daily admissions to the Natatorium, Water Works Family Aquatic Center, Downview Mini Golf and Driving Range, and Falls River Cruise. You'll also receive discounted coupons to the Akron Aeros, Akron Zoo, Chick Fil-A, Rita's Italian Ice and Strickland's Frozen Custard. Summerpacs go on sale May 1. Call 330-971-8225 for more information.
