Akron General to host senior driver course

Concerned about a parent, older friend or family member whose driving skills may not be as sharp as they used to be? AARP's safe driver course is a classroom refresher course for motorists to help sharpen driving skills. The course includes: avoiding driving hazards, aggressive drivers and more. No testing is involved. Participants in the course may qualify for a discount on their auto insurance.

An upcoming class will be April 7 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Montrose Room at the Akron General Health & Wellness Center-West, 4125 Medina Road in west Akron. Cost of the course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

There is no need to pre-pay for the class; however, AARP members must have their membership number with them when they come to the class. Checks are made payable to AARP. Call 330-344-6376 for details.

Falls Democratic Club meets March 17

A meeting of the Cuyahoga Falls Democratic Club will take place March 17 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Quirk Cultural Center, 1201 Grant Ave., Room 212.

Silver Lake Garden Club meets March 15

Silver Lake Garden Club will have a membership meeting March 15 at 12:30 p.m. at Silver Lake Village Hall, 2961 Kent Road. This event is "Kick- Off Luncheon 2010."

Section III will host and serve soup and salad.

A business meeting will follow the lunch and include the announcement of the 2010 programs and events. There will be no formal program or speaker, instead, a surprise "giveaway" is planned for a hands on project, to be enjoyed during the growing season and beyond.

All villagers are invited.

Gardeners' group
meets March 16

Presidential Park Gardeners will meet at the home of Gail Spahn in Cuyahoga Falls on March 16 at 1 p.m. Members will bring packages of their favorite seeds and give tips for planting and how to grow. A Chinese raffle of the seed packs will follow.

Engineering group offers scholarships

The Akron Section Society of Plastic Engineers Scholarship Program are offering scholarships for up to $3,000 per year for tuition, books, laboratory fees, and other educational costs for courses necessary to earn a certificate or associate or baccalaureate degree in preparation for a career in polymers. Particular emphasis is given to students enrolling in two- and four-year programs with a plastics application.

The criteria for candidate selection are: scholastic achievement; grade point average; and courses and exposure to polymer related subjects; interest in a plastics career; submitting an essay outlining career interests and goals; financial need; social qualities; leadership; extracurricular activities; two letters of reference from instructors or supervisors (should be included with application); and residence within area covered by Akron SPE.

Interested students from local high schools, technical, and vocational schools, and area colleges are encouraged to fill out the attached SPE Scholarship Application form, including the essay, references, and current transcript.

All scholarships are awarded for one year with option for renewal. The awards are for full-time students only. Co-op students are also eligible.

Pain support group convenes March 16

The Chronic Pain Support Group will have Rick Hohan, Director of Ambulatory Services for Summa Western Reserve Hospital, at the next meeting to answer questions about the new Pain Center that will be at the hospital. He was scheduled to speak last month, but the meeting was canceled due to the weather.

The meeting will be March 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Summa Western Reserve Hospital (formerly Cuyahoga Falls General), 1900 23rd St. Cuyahoga Falls in Auditorium #1. Visitors are asked to bring any questions they may have about the new Pain Center that will be at the hospital when Summit Pain moves out in April. For details, e-mail circclerk@core.com.

Northampton Grange meets March 17

Northampton Grange will host an open meeting on March 17 for all community residents to come and enjoy time with neighbors. The group will meet at 851 W. Bath Road in the Olde Town Hall building next to the fire station.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. with a time of making favors for a local nursing home. At 6:30, a movie will be shown featuring the talents of Victor Borge. Popcorn and refreshments will be served.

A cookie baking contest will be judged with members of the Grange doing the baking. For the group's community service, everyone attending may bring in cereal for donation to Love Inc. of Akron.

St. Patrick's Day celebration in Akron

A St. Patrick's Day celebration will take place March 17 at St. Brendan Ancient Order of Hibernian Hall, 753 N. Main St., Akron. Irish Mass will take place at noon. Doors are open from 1 to 11 p.m. Danny Clark & The Bog Ponies will perform, and traditional Irish foods will be available. For details, call 330-434-1916.

Community Support Services to meet

Community Support Services Inc. will host its monthly Board of Directors Meeting on March 18 at 150 Cross St., Akron. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and is open to the public. Board committee meetings take place on a monthly basis.

Used book sale at Falls church March 20

St. John's Episcopal Church will host a used book sale on March 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the church, 2220 Second St., Cuyahoga Falls. Parking is available in the Second Street deck across from the church. Adult and children's books, puzzles, videos, etc. will be available.

Relay For Life fundraiser is March 20

The Pirates of the Cure-ibbean Relay For Life team will host a Breakfast with the Easter Bunny on March 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. It will take place at the Cuyahoga Falls FOP lodge at 436 Graham Road in Cuyahoga Falls. For a donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under, attendees can enjoy a breakfast consisting of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and a beverage. There will also be free crafts for the children and a bake sale with various baked goods and homemade Easter candy. All proceeds will benefit the Cuyahoga Falls Relay For Life. Equestrian group hosts tack auction March 21

The Summit County 4-H All-Star Equestrians Club is hosting its fifth annual Tack Auction on March 21 at 11 a.m. at Silver Springs Lodge located at 5027 Stow Road. The group consists of girls from Hudson, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls and surrounding communities. There will be a selection of new tack auctioned off along with raffle prizes. The University of Akron Western Equestrian Team will be selling concessions throughout the day. Anyone who is interested in selling their used tack should contact Debbie at 330-686-0155. Historical society convenes March 22

On March 22, the Northampton Historical Society will host its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Northampton Town Hall on West Bath Road across the street from the Northampton United Methodist Church. The program will feature George Winkleman on the Botzum pioneers of Bath Township and the Botzum Farm. All ages are welcome.

'Alice in Wonderland' event to benefit the Dane Foundation

Children are invited to walk through the rabbit hole for Tea with Alice ... In Wonderland at 1 p.m. March 28 in the fellowship hall at the First Church of God, 464 Northeast Ave., Tallmadge.

Photos, stories, autographs and activities are just a part of the Mad Hatter's tea party.

When the curious guests arrive, they'll enjoy a walk through the rabbit hole and greetings from all Alice's friends. Alice's new friends will also enjoy a tea party with snacks, games, activities, a Wonderland shop, stories by Alice and other friends and a token gift to take home from the Tea Party.

Tickets are $12 per person for all ages and must be purchased in advance.

Young guests are encouraged to dress as Alice or any other character from the story. Parents may take their own cameras and video equipment to capture their little Alice or rabbit enjoying a morning with the professional characters from Wonderland.

Proceeds from this year's Tea Party with Alice in Wonderland will benefit The Dane Foundation. The mission of The Dane Foundation is to address the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, single mothers and senior citizens. For more information, visit www.TheDaneFoundation.org.
