Falls Historical Society meets March 10

The monthly meeting of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society will take place in the Cuyahoga Falls Library, 2015 Third St., on March 10 at 7 p.m.

The program will be presented by Mr. John H. Rodgers, who is a well-known traveler and lecturer. He will speak in detail about traveling the Santa Fe Trail starting in Old Franklin, Mo. He will also talk about the Pony Express and how it carved a special place in American history.

The society's museum at 2083 Cook St. is now open each Monday from 8 a.m. to noon. It is also open the third Sunday of each month. This month that will be March 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. There have been many new displays set up for visitors to see.

Support group for parents meets March 9

Zane's Foundation Support Group meetings provide an opportunity for parents, professionals and paraprofessionals to gather for support, discussion, education and networking.

In 2010, the group will meet at Journey Covenant Church, 2679 North Haven Blvd.

The next meeting will take place March 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Dr. Karen Majeski, State Support Team 8 Director, will answer visitors' questions about their child's IEP.

Falls non-profit

On March 10 from 5 to 8 p.m., make dinner reservations at Bricco Restaurant in Akron to benefit Evant Inc. Fifteen percent of the night's food sales will be donated to Evant. Contact Bricco at 330-475-1600 and mention Evant when making the reservation.

Bricco is located at 1 West Exchange St., Akron (Corner of Main & Exchange). A dinner out can help Evant, a residential service provider whose mission is "listening to and supporting people with disabilities."

St. Thomas Hospital fundraiser kickoff March 10

St. Thomas Hospital and the Beacon Journal Charity Fund will host "A Day At The Races" kickoff luncheon on March 10 at 11 a.m. at the Portage Country Club.

There will be music to greet all from All Lew's Jazz. The event will also include balloons, candy, flowers and food, along with a style show from Dillard's. All women that have chaired or volunteered for the "A Day At The Races" are invited to attend.

Heading up this year's race is Irene Berger, backed by co-chairs Madeline Bozzelli and June Carter.

They will begin selling tickets to win prizes of $10,000, $2,500, and $1,000. A new feature this year: 10 people will win $100.

The St. Thomas Women's Board is led by President Chris Tawney. "A Day At The Races" will take place May 13 at Thistle Down Race Track.

Daughters of American Revolution meets March 13

The Cuyahoga Falls Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at the home of Helen Stefanka on March 13, at 10:30 a.m. Member Janice Doulilis will present the program on "Candle Making" with historical and how to insights. Plans for an April meeting will be discussed.

Members in attendance are asked to bring Campbell's labels to send to the DAR schools and canceled stamps for the veterans.

Silver Lake Garden Club meets March 15

Silver Lake Garden Club will have a membership meeting March 15 at 12:30 p.m. at Silver Lake Village Hall, 2961 Kent Road. This event is "Kick- Off Luncheon 2010."

Section III will host and serve soup and salad.

A business meeting will follow the lunch and include the announcement of the 2010 programs and events.

There will be no formal program or speaker, instead, a surprise "giveaway" is planned for a hands on project, to be enjoyed during the growing season and beyond.

All villagers are invited.

Photo exhibit at local gallery starting
March 10

"RED," a photography exhibit from Lesley Anne Katzenmeyer, will be at City/ART Gallery, 2091 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, from March 10 through March 30.

A wine and cheese opening reception will take place March 12 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Engineering group offers scholarships

The Akron Section Society of Plastic Engineers Scholarship Program are offering scholarships for up to $3,000 per year for tuition, books, laboratory fees, and other educational costs for courses necessary to earn a certificate or associate or baccalaureate degree in preparation for a career in polymers. Particular emphasis is given to students enrolling in two- and four-year programs with a plastics application.

The criteria for candidate selection are: scholastic achievement; grade point average; and courses and exposure to polymer related subjects; interest in a plastics career; submitting an essay outlining career interests and goals; financial need; social qualities; leadership; extracurricular activities; two letters of reference from instructors or supervisors (should be included with application); and residence within area covered by Akron SPE.

Interested students from local high schools, technical, and vocational schools, and area colleges are encouraged to fill out the attached SPE Scholarship Application form, including the essay, references, and current transcript.

All scholarships are awarded for one year with option for renewal. The awards are for full-time students only. Co-op students are also eligible.

Deadline is March 15.

For renewal applicants, the scholarship recipient must: Maintain a minimum 2.5/4.0 grade point average or equivalent; Submit grade reports and course selections demonstrating polymer-related curriculum prior to start of next semester; and Apply for renewal scholarship using SPE application form. (References and essay are not required for renewal.)

Names of scholarship recipients will be distributed to donor companies for possible internship or cooperative programs.

The number of scholarships awarded per year will be variable depending on the number of qualifying applicants.

Pain support group convenes March 16

The Chronic Pain Support Group will have Rick Hohan, Director of Ambulatory Services for Summa Western Reserve Hospital, at the next meeting to answer questions about the new Pain Center that will be at the hospital. He was scheduled to speak last month, but the meeting was canceled due to the weather.

The meeting will be March 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Summa Western Reserve Hospital (formerly Cuyahoga Falls General), 1900 23rd St. Cuyahoga Falls in Auditorium #1.

Visitors are asked to bring any questions they may have about the new Pain Center that will be at the hospital when Summit Pain moves out in April.

Donations accepted for Humane Society rummage sale

PAWSibilities®, Humane Society of Greater Akron is accepting donations for its "Imagine the PAWSibilities Rummage Sale" to take place March 26 and 27.

St. Brendan site

A Lenten Fish Fry will take place every Friday through April 2. Doors are open from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Brendan Ancient Order of Hibernian Hall, 753 N. Main St., Akron.
