Sylvia Lowe Miller celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at Cardinal Retirement Village Feb. 6.

Sylvia was born in Cleveland on Jan. 7, 1910. In 1913, at the age of 3, she traveled to Russia with her mother to visit family members.

A six-month visit turned into a 10-year stay, due to the breakout of World War I.

It was not safe to cross the Atlantic, so the family was forced to stay in Russia.

As a result, Sylvia attended school, learned to speak Russian and took ballet lessons. In 1923, at the age of 13, her family was able to return to Cleveland.

Although she attended public school, she could not speak English and was initially placed in a Kindergarten class.

She did well and was soon placed with older students. She later attended John Adams High School.

Sylvia met her future husband, Julius Miller and they were married on Feb. 17, 1935.

They moved to Painesville where they established and operated a live poultry market business along with a location in Willoughby.

Years later, they bought and managed Miller's Restaurant in Painesville where customers came to eat Sylvia's famous fried chicken.

They had two children, Leon Miller, a resident of Perry, and Frieda Miller-Brown of Hudson.

Sylvia attended Lakeland Community College to re-learn the Russian language. This enabled her to communicate with her family in Russia. She later visited Russia where she was reunited with her family. She also traveled to Israel, Mexico City and Florida.

After 43 years of marriage, Julius passed away in 1978. Sylvia sold her home in Painesville and moved to Stow in 1992.

She was a resident of Silver Lake Towers for 17 years and has recently moved to Cardinal Retirement Village.
