Grandview United Methodist Church

Grandview United Methodist Church, 2315 Phelps Ave., invites neighbors and friends to spend some time in worship with the congregation during this Lenten season. Lent is a time of preparation for Easter, which is the celebration of Jesus' resurrection. During this time of preparation, some people fast or give up something important to them. Some people spend time in study, devotions and prayer. Others cut back on their social activities and give service to the community.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2141 Fifth St. in Cuyahoga Falls, invites community members to join the congregation this weekend at one of the church's three services to worship and praise the Lord and Savior. Saturday at 6 p.m. is a contemporary service. Sunday at 8:45 a.m. is the traditional service and at 11:15 a.m. is another contemporary service. Community members are also invited to join the congregation at 10 a.m. on Sundays for its 'Kids of the Kingdom' and adult Bible studies. This weekend, Pastor Keith Johnson will be starting his four-week sermon series on "Having a Faith That Works!"

During Lent, the church will have Wednesday services starting at 7. Each week the congregation will be visited by a person who played a role in the final days of Christ's life. Nicodemus, Barabbas, Pilate, the Thief's Father, Judas, and Mary will each visit during the Lenten season.

First United Methodist Church

"Outflow" is the name of the study for Lent at First United Methodist Church, 245 Portage Trail. The Rev. Brown will be preaching on the theme of the study which is outward focused living for an inward focused world. Services are at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 and 11 on Sundays. He will also be leading the study at 9:45 each Sunday in Lent. The Rev. Susan Lausch will be leading the "Outflow" study on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7. Director of Education, Karol Lewis is leading a small group on Monday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30. The Rev. Katie Osier will also be using that theme as a study for the youth. All are welcome to join any of the study groups. Books are $10 each and may be ordered by calling the church office at 330-923-5241, ext. 210.

Would you like to help make clothes for children in Haiti? Join the ladies of First Church on March 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. They will be cutting fabric for shorts and tops. On March 18 they will sew from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fabric is needed. Donations of fabric can be dropped off at the church. For those who would rather work on the clothes at home, there are kits than can be taken home and returned to the church by March 7. All are welcome to help in this project.

Maurice Duruflé's Requiem will be performed at the church on March 7 at 7 p.m. The Chancel Choir of First Church combines with the choir from Westlake United Methodist Church to perform one of the great choral masterpieces of the 20th Century. Under the direction of Andy Call from West Lake, with Dean Wagner from First Church, organist, and orchestra, this concert will be a spiritually uplifting experience. A free will offering will be taken and babysitting will be provided.

Northminster Presbyterian Church

The Northminster Presbyterian Church, 104 W. Portage Trail Extension, invites community members to join the congregation during the Lenten Season by attending the church's Wednesday Bread and Broth Series and Study, each Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The study will conclude on March 24. The evenings will begin with a light supper (Bread and Broth), followed by a study led by the Rev. Stephanie Crossland with a discussion format.

During the Lenten Season, the Rev. Crossland will focus her worship themes around "Faces Around the Cross" at each 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning worship service, including "The Woman Who Washed Jesus' Feet," "Judas Iscariot," "Pontius Pilate" and "Servant Girl from Caiaphas' House." The Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Communion Service will take place on April 1, with the Rev. Crossland speaking on "Faces Around the Cross-Ours." On Easter Sunday, the morning worship service will focus on "Faces Around the Cross-Mary Magdalene."

The Children's Sunday School classes continue to meet each Sunday morning, following the Pastor's "Moment With the Children." Children in grades 1-5 meet with the Shining Stars Class, while the students in grades 6-8 meet with the New Beginnings Class.

The next spaghetti dinner will be March 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. The dinner includes spaghetti with marinara, chunky meat sauce or special Alfredo sauce, salad, bread, dessert and coffee, punch or tea. The cost is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.

The second Sunday of each month is the church's "Good Neighbors Sunday," where the church tries to fill its grocery cart with non-perishable food items and brown grocery bags.

United Presbyterian Church

The theme for the worship services for 2010 is: "Experiencing the Living God: Knowing His Will -- Living Your Purpose." The message this week: "Our Plans Vs. God's Plan," drawing on the life of Moses, when he took matters into his own hands and had to leave Egypt as a wanted murderer.

The traditional service starts at 8:30 a.m. and the New Creation contemporary service starts at 11 a.m. The Educational Hour, including "Amazement Park" for elementary school-age children, is from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Child care for babies and toddlers is available throughout the Sunday morning activities. Parking is available on church property. All are welcome.

On Feb. 28, from 7 to 8 p.m., the U. P. C. Youth Groups will meet at the church for both Middle School and High School groups.

U.P.C. is participating in an inter-church bowling league at Tallmadge Lanes, Mondays, beginning at 6:45 p.m.

PrayerLab will meet March 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. PrayerLab is a ministry that focuses in on participants' prayer needs and helps participants grow in effective prayer. No agenda or liturgy so as to be Spirit-led.

Wednesday Night ALIVE!, March 3, from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. is a family-oriented program that offers spiritual growth opportunities for all ages. A family-style dinner is included. This is a 10-week program and is open to all. For more details and for registration, contact the church office.

On March 5, members and friends of U.P.C. have the opportunity to work with Springtime of Hope, a ministry to the homeless at St. Bernard's in Akron. For more information, call the church office.

The Men's Breakfast will meet March 6 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Silver Swan on Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls. The resource the men are using this year is: "Man Does Not Live By Sports Alone" by Dennis Swanberg.

On March 6 at 9 a.m., the church will host Project Rise, a ministry that makes dolls and soft toys for homeless children. They will meet in the church library.

Bethany United Church of Christ

Sunday worship times at Bethany UCC are 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. with Church School for all ages at 9:15 a.m. Bethany offers a variety of worship opportunities during this holy season. Join the congregation March 4 at 6:30 p.m. for Soup/Bread and the study. All are invited. To learn more about Bethany Church come to the Lounge (1st floor, 13th Street entrance) after 10:30 a.m. worship Feb. 28 for the Inquiry Meeting. Pastor Steve will be sharing about the congregation. Bethany's Youth Fellowship will be participating in "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," an Interfaith Hospitality Network fundraiser on Feb. 28. The focus of this event is to bring together the families from the church's 28 congregations to celebrate the success of the IHN mission. The church is encouraging all Bethany members to ask for the support of family, friends, and neighbors and collect pledges for the walk. Peninsula United Methodist Church

Peninsula United Methodist Church located at 1575 Main St., Peninsula, will host pierogie and fish lunches and dinners every Friday through March 26. Lunches are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinners are 5-7 p.m.

The menu includes four pierogies, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $7.50; two generous pieces of batter-fried fish, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $7.50; mixed: two pierogies and one piece of baked or batter-fried fish, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $7.50.

Pierogie choices are: potato and cheese, potato and onion, sauerkraut, apple pie and the featured flavor of the week.

Additional Pierogies are $1.25 each and additional pieces of fish are $2.25 each. Also available will be onions in butter for the pierogies and tarter sauce for the fish.

Kid's meal: two Pierogies or one fish, coleslaw, applesauce, roll and beverage for $5. Take-outs are welcome. Please call the church at 330-657-2567 for questions or to place a take-out order.

St. John's Episcopal Church

A special offering for Haiti will be taken Feb. 28 after the usual Sunday offering. The Outreach Committee will match dollar for dollar whatever the church collects, and the combined offering will be sent to Episcopal Relief and Development.

The Lenten Program is based on the story of Jonah. The second Sunday will be Resisting the Call. There will be a Children's Chat explaining Lenten customs.

A sign-up list is available at the back of the church for those who plan to participate in the Altar Vigil All Night Prayer. It begins at 8 p.m. April 1 and will go through the night. The men of St. John's will provide security throughout the night.

A survey is being circulated asking for opinions regarding the sign in front of the church. The survey should be filled out and returned to the office.

The Episcopal Church Women's Board meeting is March 4 at 10:30. Plans are being made for the card party April 20.

Pilgrim United Church of Christ

Pilgrim United Church of Christ on the corner of Broad Boulevard and Second Street would welcome visitors to their worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m. Pastor Bruce continues his series of sermons leading up to Easter. Members are reminded that Pilgrim offers six interactive prayer stations in the Heritage Room that are open any time the church building is open for activities. The Youth Director announces that the Youth Trip to Paradise United Church of Christ in Louisville will be take place on March 6 for all Junior and Senior High students. The title of the event is "My Life will Suck Without Him (GOD)" Those going on the trip should be at the church by 7:45 a.m. on that date, and will return from the journey at about 4:15 p.m. Lunch will be provided, but a free will offering will be accepted. Volunteers to drive may be needed. Medical and permission slips will be needed. Call the church at 330-928-4847 to register or for further information. First United Methodist Church of Akron

The Men's Club of First United Methodist Church of Akron is sponsoring Lenten Fish Fry events on March 5 and March 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be fried fish or baked cod, baked chicken breast, potatoes (baked or steak fries), cole slaw, cake and beverage. The price is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 3 to 12. University of Akron students with current ID are free. Tickets can be purchased through the church office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at the door.

The Church in Silver Lake

The Church in Silver Lake's Sunday worship is at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary with coffee and light refreshments following. Christian education classes for ages 4-12 and nursery care are provided during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

The Junior High youth group meets every Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. The Senior High meets the second Sunday of every month from 2 to 5 p.m.

The hot meal to the community, "Lunch On Us," is served the first Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Cornerstone Community Church

Cornerstone Community Church invites everyone in and around Stow to a very special series of messages designed to address the hurts, habits and hang-ups everyone has and with which they struggle.

The messages come from "The Beatitudes" which are part of The Sermon on the Mount in the 5th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible.
