Grandview United Methodist Church

Grandview United Methodist Church, 2315 Phelps Ave, will be observing Ash Wednesday, February 17 at 7:30pm.  Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the wilderness journey of Lent.  The readings for Ash Wednesday focus on realigning spiritual practices with their intended purposes such as fasting, prayer, corporate acts of repentance and giving to help the poor and needy. The Lenten season is a time of preparation as we prepare for the coming of Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Come join the congregation at Grandview as the group observes the imposition of ashes during the worship service.  The Chancel Choir will also be singing.  

     "Faith Through the Movies" is a monthly program held at Grandview. The next session is Feb. 21 @ 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall as the group gathers to watch "Dan in Real Life."  In this film, Steve Carell protrays an advice columnist who has trouble managing his own relationships with his family, his 3 daughters  and his love life.  This movie is guaranteed to tickle your funny bone and touch your heart. Bring a snack or sack lunch to enjoy during the movie and plan to stay afterward for a brief discussion of the faith points of the film.

The regular worship service is at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday.

 

Northminster
Presbyterian Church

The Northminster Presbyterian Church, located at 104 W. Portage Trail Extension, invites community members to join the congregation in observing the 2010 Lenten Season by attending its Wednesday Bread and Broth Series and Study, each Wednesday during Lent from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The study will conclude on March 24. The evenings will begin with a light supper (Bread and Broth), followed by a study led by the Rev. Stephanie Crossland with a discussion format.

Crossland will continue her focus on "Faces Around the Cross" at each 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service during the Lenten Season. Her worship themes include "The Woman at the Well," "The Woman who Washed Jesus' Feet," "Judas Iscariot," "Pontius Pilate," "Servant Girl from Caiaphas' House," "Ours" and on Easter Sunday, "Mary Magdalene."

The Northminster Book Club continues to meet on the third Monday of each month at 1:15 p.m. in the church lounge. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to come to the next meeting Feb. 15.

The Northminster Craft Guild will host its Wednesday meeting on Feb. 17, and their Saturday meeting on Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church lounge. Come to one or come to both, and bring a current project and sack lunch, for fun and fellowship.

Join the congregation in observing the beginning of the Lenten season by attending the first "Bread and Broth" supper and service on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will begin with a light supper at 6 p.m. in the Atkins Hall, followed by a traditional "sackcloth and ashes" service at 6:30 in the sanctuary.

The second Sunday of each month is "Good Neighbors Sunday," where the congregation tries to fill the grocery cart with non-perishable food items and brown grocery bags.

First United Methodist Church

Going Strong at First United Methodist Church, 245 Portage Trail, will be having a program on Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. The speaker is Betsy Kling, Channel 3 Meterologist. Kling is a Copley native. Going Strong is an active group of retirees that meet once a month for programs in or out of the church and invites everyone to enjoy their programs. On Feb. 19 from 7 to 10 p.m., First Church is having a benefit for the Michael Scott family. Michael, a First Church member, died suddenly a few months ago leaving his wife, Lisa, and three young children. Before Michael's death of a pulmonary embolism, the Scott family had undergone a tremendous struggle when their youngest daughter was born with Down Syndrome and spent nine weeks in the NICU. Proceeds of the benefit will go directly to Lisa Scott to help her with her financial hardship. The benefit will feature "The Get Back Band" with music of the Beatles, dancing, a light refreshment and dessert buffet, a silent auction throughout the evening. Child care will be provided. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at the church office Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Donations may also be made to the Michael Scott Memorial Fund at any Huntington Bank.

"Outflow" is the name of the study for Lent at First Church. The Rev. Brown will be preaching on the theme of the study which is outward focused living for an inward focused world. Services are at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 and 11 on Sundays. He will also be leading a study between services starting Feb. 14. The Rev. Susan Lausch will be leading a small group study on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m. starting Feb. 17. Director of Education Karol Lewis will be leading a small group on Monday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 starting Feb. 15. The Rev. Katie Osier will also be using that theme as a study for the youth. All are welcome to join any of the study groups. Books are $10 each and may be ordered by calling the church office at 330-923-5241, x210.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

The church will present a murder mystery dinner theater comedy.The cast consists of youth and adult members of the church.

"Murder, Mayhem and Marshmallow Salad" by Shelly Sellepack will be performed at Redeemer's new Family Life Center on Feb. 20 at 6:45 p.m. and Feb. 21 at 12:45 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the senior youth trip to the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans this summer.

The trip will also include a service day to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina as they continue to rebuild their city.

Tickets are $18 each. The ticket includes the attendee's choice of main entree, plus appetizer, salad, beverage and dessert. United Presbyterian Church

The theme for the worship services for 2010 is: "Experiencing the Living God: Knowing His Will -- Living Your Purpose." The message this week: "Drawn to the Flame of God," using the call of Moses as a model for humanity's own involvement in God's plan.

The traditional service starts at 8:30 a.m. and the New Creation contemporary service starts at 11 a.m. The Educational Hour, including "Amazement Park" for elementary school- age children, is from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Childcare for babies and toddlers is available throughout the Sunday morning activities. Parking is available on church property. All are welcome.

On Feb. 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., the U. P. C. Youth Groups will meet at the church for both Middle School and High School groups.

U.P.C. is participating in an inter-church bowling league at Tallmadge Lanes, Monday evenings, beginning at 6:45 p.m.

PrayerLab will meet Feb. 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. PrayerLab is a ministry that focuses in on participants' prayer needs and helps participants grow in effective prayer. No agenda or liturgy so as to be Spirit-led.

Wednesday Night ALIVE!, Feb. 17, from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. is a family-oriented program that offers spiritual growth opportunities for all ages. A family-style dinner is included. This is a 10- week program and is open to all. For more details, contact the church office.

The Ash Wednesday Service, Feb. 17, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary, with an emphasis on new beginnings with God.

On Feb. 18, D.M.A. (Don't Mention Age), a social group for senior citizens will meet in the Fellowship Hall for lunch beginning at noon and followed by a program at 1 p.m. D.M.A. will view a video of Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff, currently performing in Branson, Mo.

The Men's Breakfast will meet Feb. 20, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Silver Swan on Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls. The resource the men are using this year is: "Man Does Not Live By Sports Alone" by Dennis Swanberg. U.P.C. is also organizing "God Sightings" Bible discussion groups based on the "God Sightings" year-long program through the scriptures. The program will begin on Feb. 17 -- Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten season.

Bethany United
Church of Christ

Sunday worship times at Bethany UCC are 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with Church School for all ages at 9:15 a.m. The Men's Breakfast is a time for men of the church to get together to share faith, food, and fellowship together; as well as a few chores with which the custodians could use some help (Next breakfast is Feb. 17). Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the celebration of Easter (April 4). Bethany will offer worship opportunities during this holy season beginning with: Ash Wednesday worship service, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. All are invited to attend. Bethany Kitchen provides a free luncheon for those in the community who need a meal. Help is always needed for food preparation, serving and cleaning up. All are welcome to join the congregation Feb. 20 at 11:30 a.m. and enjoy fellowship and lunch. On Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. Bethany Nurses will present Thick and Thin - Understanding Teen Depression. Immaculate Heart
of Mary Church

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will host a three-evening Lenten Mission titled "Finding Christ in the Most Unexpected Places" presented by the Rev. Donald Dunson, Moral Theologian on the Faculty of St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe on Feb. 22, 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. in the Church at 1945 Portage Trail.

Stow United
Methodist Church

Ash Wednesday Services will be Feb. 17 at noon and 7 p.m. A Lenten Study will begin on "Traveling the Prayer Paths of Jesus" Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in Room 200. It will be a six-week study. Everyone is welcome.The church will have a special service titled, "Jam For Jeffrey" on Feb. 19 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jeffrey Wiley is a teen in Cuyahoga Falls who needs a service dog to help with his seizures. A special offering will be taken to help. The band, "August," will play during the service. No tickets are necessary. Refreshments will be served afterwards. St. John's
Episcopal Church

A special offering for Haiti will be taken up on all four Sundays in February after the usual Sunday offering. The Outreach Committee will match dollar for dollar whatever the church collects, and the combined offering will be sent to Episcopal Relief and Development.

Shrove Tuesday is Feb. 16 and the annual pancake dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Come celebrate before Lent begins. Tickets are $5 for adults and children under 12 are free.

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will be Feb. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. The men of the church put this event on every year and the tickets are priced so that the whole family can attend for a nominal fee. Tickets are $5 for adults and children are free. On Feb. 14, there will be an intergenerational program taking place after the 10 a.m. service. The church is located at 2220 Second St.

Pilgrim United
Church of Christ

The historic Pilgrim United Church of Christ on the corner of Second Street and Broad Boulevard welcomes one and all to come to worship at 10:30 Sunday mornings. On Feb.14, Pastor Kirk Bruce's sermon will be "God's Valentine." After the service a pancake and sausage breakfast will be served by the Christian Education Board in preparation for Lent. On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, there will be a meal at 6:30 p.m. with homemade soups, salad and freshly baked breads followed by a short service at 7:30 p.m. The service, intended to help shape the time of preparation for Easter, will feature special music, ashes and communion. Feb. 21 is Movie Night at Pilgrim at 7 p.m. The film, "Fireproof," provided by the Evangelism Board, carries a simple but powerful message about relationships with each other and with Christ. Child care will be provided, so bring popcorn and a soft drink and share this special evening with members and friends. Broadman Baptist Church
