A major step toward the redevelopment of the former State Road Shopping Center site was taken Monday night. Cuyahoga Falls City Council approved a contract to sell the 25.29-acre site to Stark Enterprises for $3.79 million.

Robert L. Stark, president and chief executive officer of Stark Enterprises, said the development planned for the plaza site will be called Portage Crossing and will consist of retail establishments anchored by a grocery store.

"I appreciate Council's vote," said Mayor Don L. Robart after the meeting. "It shows they have a vision along with the administration."

Councilwoman Carol Klinger (R-at large) cast the only dissenting vote.

"I believe the passage of this ordinance to be a gamble I am not willing to take," said Klinger.

There's so much wrong with this I don't know where to start.

If the plaza was so bad it had to be torn down, who in city government failed to enforce zoning codes to ensure the building didn't turn into such an eyesore in the first place?

They spent 10m and who knows how much to tear it down. Now they sell it for less than 4m.

If it wasn't worth any more than 4m, why was 10m plus paid for it in the first place?

What am I missing? I guarantee you the next step will be tax abatement to "spur" development.

I don't understand why the residents aren't tar and feathering the don and his cabal for this one.

The two folks making comments are overlooking a few vital facts. While in the short term, Carol Klinger's dissenting vote, if joined as a majority vote, would've meant paying some interest while more suitable developers and plans could be found, the reality is that her vote likely came at least partially due to the fact that this city has an abundance of grocery stores and other retailers already in place in the area and, rather than new retailers forcing out loyal, locally owned shops, the State Road Plaza area and the citizens of this city might be better served by developers willing to put in place the sorts of businesses that don't duplicate area services--perhaps a movie multiplex or other not-too-expensive and/or combined entertainment outlet. And, if the shops that are built are too upscale, look out--if they don't get enough regular buyers they won't last, and then where will we be? Her vote was not a knee-jerk reaction but a considered one, and likely resulted, too, from asking hard questions that weren't adequately answered in prior sessions.

Carol Klinger voted to spend almost $11 million to buy the property and now she wants to leave it sit idle while the City pays interest on the debt! She has no vision. She also has not learned that it takes money to make money. How did she get re-elected? I guess her $68,000 campaign debt speaks for itself! And this is the woman that thinks she wants to run for Mayor? I hope the voters in Cuyahoga Falls have enough sense to not let that happen!
