JOHN L. DARAGO
Played football for Notre Dame
John L. Darago, 77, son of Barbara (Schlaker) Darago and Walter Darago (deceased) died Jan. 1, 2010. Born in Akron, Mr. Darago was a lifetime resident of the area. Mr. Darago was a 1950 graduate of St. Vincent High School and attended the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship, graduating in 1954. He had been a loan officer in the banking industry. He eventually retired from the Richfield Coliseum. Mr. Darago was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, a life member and PER of B.P.O.E. (Elks) #1923, a past president of the Notre Dame Club of Akron and a former CYO coach at St. Joseph's grade school. He was a loyal and devoted Notre Dame fan.
He is survived by his wife Rita, of 56 years; sons John J. of Akron, Kevin M., Timothy J. (Carolyn), and Patrick G. (Mary), all of Cuyahoga Falls; and grandchildren, Timothy, Katie, Michael, Michelle, Patrick, and Nicholas.
An Elks service took place in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass took place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cuyahoga Falls. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of other remembrances, the family requests memorials be made to the University of Notre Dame Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 519, Notre Dame, Ind. 46556-9988, or the St. Vincent-St. Mary Endowment Fund, 15 N. Maple St., Akron 44303 in his memory. His video tribute will be viewable on the funeral home Web site.
