The Church in
Silver Lake

The Church in Silver Lake's Sunday Worship is at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary with coffee and light refreshments following. Christian Education classes for ages 4-12 and nursery care are provided during the 10:30 a.m. worship service. The junior high youth group meets every Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. The senior high youth group meets the second Sunday of every month from 2 to 5 p.m.

The hot meal to the community, "Lunch On Us," is served the first Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.

First United Methodist Church

Dean and Friends, an annual concert by organist H. Dean Wagner will take place Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 245 Portage Trail. This year's concert features an all-out brass and organ spectacular, with three trumpets, three trombones, percussion and organ. Dean and the brass will perform mostly music composed by the great French composers for the big cathedrals there. Music includes Marcel Dupre's "Poeme Heroique," written for the rededication of the cathedral of Verdun, Widor's "Lord, Save Thy People," Vierne's "Marche Triomphale" written fro the centenary of Napoleon. This concert is open to all. There is child care provided. A freewill offering will be taken to benefit the First Church Arts Series.

If you are thinking of having a Super Bowl party and would like to buy some Super Bowl subs to feed your hungry party goers, the youth at First Church are having a sub sale. The 6-inch Italian subs are stuffed with ham, salami, pepperoni and cheese and are only $5 each. Order them before Feb. 3 by calling 330-923-5241, ext.. 218. They will be freshly made on Feb. 7 and may be picked up between 3:30 and 4:30 that day. There is free delivery during that time to those living in Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, Munroe Falls and Hudson. The proceeds from the sale will benefit the activities of the Epworth youth ministry.

Northminster Presbyterian Church

The Northminster Presbyterian Church, located at 104 W. Portage Trail Extension in Cuyahoga Falls, invites community members to join them for Sunday morning worship service at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Stephanie Crossland. Rev. Crossland will speak on Jan. 24 on "Stranger Things Have Happened," with scripture from Nehemiah and Luke. On Jan. 31, she will focus on "Be On Your Way," with readings from Jeremiah and Luke.

The Children's Sunday School classes continue to meet each Sunday morning, following the Pastor's "Moment With the Children." Children in grades 1 through 5 (The Shining Stars Class) meet in the church lounge, while the students in grades 6 through 8 (The New Beginnings Class) meet in the Youth Room.

The Pioneer Club, the church's non-denominational youth club for ages 4 through seventh grade, will resume meeting on Jan. 28, at 6 p.m., for fun, learning, crafts, music, snacks and an opportunity to earn badges. At that meeting, a member of the Akron College of Clowning Arts will provide a fun and exciting evening for all.

The next meeting of the Men's Fellowship will be Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. This will be their Annual Men's Fellowship Sweetheart Dinner. Call the church for details.

The next spaghetti dinner will be Feb. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. The dinner includes spaghetti with marinara, chunky meat sauce or special Alfredo sauce, salad, bread, dessert and coffee, punch or tea. The cost is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.

The Northminster Book Club continues to meet on the third Monday of each month at 1:15 p.m. in the church lounge. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to come to the next meeting on Feb. 15.

The Northminster Craft Guild will host their Wednesday meeting on Feb. 17, and their Saturday meeting on Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church lounge. Come to one or come to both, and bring a current project and sack lunch, for fun and fellowship. In December, 10 prayer shawls, which were made by craft guild members or friends, were dedicated and given to those individuals with a need to be "wrapped in prayers and warmth." The church encourages anyone who knits or crochets to become a part of its Prayer Shawl ministry.

Join the church in observing the beginning of the Lenten season by attending the first "Bread and Broth" supper and service on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will begin with a light supper at 6 p.m. in Atkins Hall, followed by a traditional "sackcloth and ashes" service at 6:30 in the sanctuary. The remaining five Wednesday evenings of Lent will follow Pastor Crossland's Sunday morning lessons, "Faces Around the Cross," with a study and discussion format. Each study will be self-contained.

The second Sunday of each month is "Good Neighbors Sunday," where the church tries to fill its grocery cart with non-perishable food items and brown grocery bags.

Journey Covenant Church

Journey Covenant Church serves a free, hot dinner to local residents on the last Tuesday of every month from 6 to 7 p.m. The next dinner will take place Jan. 26. Christ Kitchen Dinners are open to the public.

United Presbyterian Church

The theme for the worship services for 2010 is: "Experiencing the Living God: Knowing His Will - Living Your Purpose." The message this week: "True Relationship: Knowing Christ"

The traditional service starts at 8:30 a.m. and the New Creation contemporary service starts at 11 a.m. The Educational Hour, including "Amazement Park" for elementary school age children, is from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Child care for babies and toddlers is available throughout the Sunday morning activities. Parking is available on church property. All are welcome.

The church office will be closed Jan. 18, due to Martin Luther King Day.

U.P.C. is participating in an inter-church bowling league at Tallmadge Lanes, Monday evenings, beginning at 6:45 p.m.

PrayerLab will meet Jan. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. PrayerLab is a ministry that focuses in on participants' prayer needs and helps participants grow in effective prayer. No agenda or liturgy so as to be Spirit-led.

Wednesday Night ALIVE! on Jan. 20 from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m., is a family-oriented program that offers spiritual growth opportunities for all ages. A family-style dinner is included. This is a ten-week program and is open to all. For more details and for registration, contact the church office.

On Jan. 23, The U.P.C. Food Pantry will be distributing food from 9 to 11 a.m.

On Jan. 24, U.P.C. will have only one worship service that morning from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by the annual congregational meeting.

St. John's Episcopal Church

Worship is at 9 a.m. Jan. 17 followed by the annual parish business meeting with Vestry elections for the class of 2013. A potluck dinner follows. Attendees should bring a dish to share.

The next session of the Wednesday morning Bible study will begin Feb. 3 and extend through April 28. The topic for study will be 1st and 2nd Corinthians. Study books will be available for $6 each.

The vestry has created an ad hoc committee to update the front sign at the corner of Second Street and Portage Trail. Anyone who would like to work on this should contact Mike Carmichael. All are welcome.

On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, the church will have members representing the important people in the church. On the third Sunday of each month, Adrian Achtermann will talk about preserving God's gifts in Creation.

St. Theresa will meet Jan. 18 and will make Valentines to be given to Children's Hospital for the patients to distribute as they wish.

The Akron Coin Club meets Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. The Double T Quilt Club meets at 6:30.

Bailey Road Christian Church

Fall to Spring hours run through May: 9:30 a.m., Sunday School for all ages; 10:45 a.m., worship service; 7 p.m., Praise Service. Nursery care provided during these services for ages infant through 3 years of age.

First and third Tuesday: 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Happy Hands, crafts and sewing.

Fourth Tuesday of each month: 7 p.m., Christian Women's Fellowship business/book study: "Behold Your God."

Wednesdays: 12:30 p.m., chair dancing, a seated exercise program; 6:30 p.m., hand chimes practice; 7:30 p.m., choir practice.

Thursdays: 7 p.m., Praise Team practice.

On the first Friday of the month at 10 a.m. is the Feed My Sheep program. Members of the church volunteer to serve lunch at Redeemer Methodist Church.

On the last Friday of the month at 10 a.m. is the Altercare program. Members of the church serve cookies, doughnuts, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate to the residents of Altercare.

On the second Saturday of the month at 8 a.m. is the Men's Christian Group meeting. All men are invited to join this new men's group.
