by Michael Leonard Sports Editor Columbus -- Black Tiger sophomores Kayleigh Scourfield and Allison Hainer looked a bit bemused with their performances after running at the state cross country meet. By contrast, coach Dan Scourfield was all smiles. In this case, it be wise for the young runners to listen to the veteran coach. Hainer and the younger Scourfield each had solid runs in their first trip to the Division I state cross country meet, which took place Nov. 7 at Scioto Downs in Columbus. Kayleigh Scourfield ended up finishing in 53rd place in the 143-girl field. Her time was 19:49.07. Hainer ended up finishing in 97th place with a time of 20:33.86. Coach Scourfield said he had only one expectation for his two young runners. "To experience this thing called 'states' and go back home and tell their teammates all about it." What's the scouting report going to be for their Black Tiger teammates? "I'm going to tell them it's a very fast course," Hainer said. "The field was very fast here today." Compared to the cold, wet, muddy conditions at the Boardman regional, conditions were vastly improved at Scioto Downs with temperatures in the low 60s and breezy winds. According to Kayleigh Scourfield, however, conditions may have improved a bit too much. "The heat got to me somewhat after the first mile," she said. "I was expecting that. The wind was kind of tough as well." With his two sophomore state qualifiers, coach Scourfield said the future of the program should be very bright. "I'm very optimistic about the program," the coach said. "The goal next year is to get the team down here. These two are going to show the way. "It looked like two sophomores running states for the first time," Scourfield added. "I have no doubt they'll both improve over the next few years and hopefully bring their teammates with them."
