It has become an annual evident.

Like the setting the clocks back at this time of the year, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy will send its girls team to the Division II state meet for the 10th straight year at Scioto Downs Race Track Nov. 7.

Of course, the Royals are the defending Division II state champions, as CVCA last year won with 51 points, a very impressive point total with 15 other teams that are the best from their respective regions. In 2007, the Royals were second to Kettering Archbishop Alter.

At the Boardman Division II regional Oct. 31, the Royals finished second to St. Vincent-St. Mary in the team standings, with the Fighting Irish winning with 57 points. CVCA had 73 points.

CVCA coach George Hallis thinks the Royals have a shot at surpassing the Irish, especially knowing his girls probably have another collective good race left in them.

"We did not run well, so hopefully with decent weather we should run better," Hallis said. "Look at our best runner Christina Blair. When she ran at Boardman earlier this year 18:47 and Saturday she ran 20:04.44."

Blair, a junior, was the individual champion, beating out SVSM's top runner, Maria Arnone, by 20 seconds. The No. 2 runner for the Royals was junior Joy Talbott, coming in fifth with a time of 20:34.

Mallory Meyers was extremely impressive at her first regional. The Royals freshman finished 16th with a time of 20:58.11. Another underclassman, sophomore Laura Rybka, was 28th with a time of 22:03.69.

The rest of the runners finished this way -- senior Ana Lewison came in 34th (22:14.41), senior Erin Craig was 39th, and Irene Frangos was 41st.

Hallis said the Nov. 6 practice jog through the Scioto Downs will serve as a reminder of what the girls need to do at state.
