Letter: Disputes School Board member's claims

Share_email E-mail Story    |    Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

I have a simple message for the School Board member who I think presents opinions as facts in this newspaper: Do your homework and learn your lesson before misleading parents and property owners.

In a Feb. 15 letter, ("Defends reconfiguration proposal," Page 9) the writer said that 118 children attending Silver Lake Elementary are "from other cities outside our district." I believe that statement is false.

More than half of these open enrollment children are from Cuyahoga Falls, and have made the choice to attend this school through intra-district open enrollment. (Thanks Curt Grimes for demonstrating that other Board members do understand enrollment terminology.)

In my opinion, the claim that the district loses money on open enrollment students is once again false. Open enrollment actually brings in significant dollars from a source other than my property tax bill and I appreciate that.

I'm fed up of proposals to close Silver Lake, Price and Preston elementary schools. I'm tired of reading letters designed to pit one neighborhood or side of town against another. We are all part of the Cuyahoga Falls School District.

I am a Cuyahoga Falls resident serving as president of the Silver Lake Home and School League. Two members of its executive board are intra-district open enrollment parents who were warmly welcomed to this school as I'm sure all open enrollment families are in other schools. District parents, whether through PTOs or PTAs, volunteer their time and energy to help support the education of district children.

My thanks to Barb Gunter, Curt Grimes, Dave Rump, and Therese Dunphy -- the four Board members who I believe are putting all of our children first.

Aw...Amy...babs!

Apparently you haven't been around long enough to have witnessed the closings of Bode, Schnee & Quirk(?) Elementary Schools and the consternation that such economically motivated realizations caused amongst certain neighborhoods!

As School Board Member Patterson has taken the time and effort to research her proposal, please have the courtesy to do the same for your challenges of same...

...um, we all know what "opinions" smell like, eh?

If the truth be known, the current School Board(in total) should be constantly updating our community as to such basics as student/teacher ratios and how such current figures meet State Standards/Minimums. Absolutely none of the parents affected were "thrilled" when the Cuyahoga Falls School Sytem had to close the elementary schools I previously mentioned but such closings were necessary!

Go figure!
