by Ellin Walsh Reporter Cuyahoga Falls -- A vote to renew insurance coverage will top City Council's agenda when it convenes Nov. 10. Council's finance committee is recommending passage of legislation which, if approved, would authorize the annual renewal of the city's property and liability insurance policies. Law Director Virgil E. Arrington Jr. said the Wichert Insurance Agency provides the city with coverage through the Selective Insurance Co. The coverage is for property, machinery, crime, automobile, general liability, law enforcement liability and public officials liability coverage. According to Arrington, the renewal would cost the city $273,624, for 12 months; he said that is a reduction in what the city paid for the same insurance last year: $291,660. However, this year the law director said the city intends to add a policy for public officials liability insurance. According to Arrington, the city added that coverage seven or eight years ago, but had no claims for several years and decided to drop it in a cost-saving move. "And, of course, as soon as we dropped it, we had a claim," Arrington reported, "which has caused us to want to go back and renew it." The additional cost for the public officials liability is $38,950 "and that is a bargain compared to the risk we take," the law director said. Deputy Finance Director Scott Fitzsimmons, the total cost would be $312,574. Electrical improvements Also on Nov. 3, Council's public improvement's committee heard a request from Electric Department Superintendent Bob Bye for permission to enter into a contract for construction of a 23kv express feed from the Valley Substation to the substation behind the service department complex on Bailey Road; installation of a conduit to complete street lighting on Cedar Hill; and the installment of new conduit in streets including Hollywood Avenue from Bailey Road to Hudson Drive; Roanoke Avenue from Hudson Drive to Charles Street; and Orrville Avenue, from Hudson Drive to Norwood Street. Full council is slated to vote on the request when it convenes Nov. 10. City Council will convene Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Natatorium, 2345 Fourth St. E-mail: ewalsh@recordpub.com Phone: 330-686-3908 Comments
