The Cuyahoga Falls cheerleaders recently attended a Universal Cheerleading Camp at The Ohio State University. During the camp, the girls learned cheers, sideline routines, dances, correct jumping technique, team bonding and leadership. Falls was divided into two squads. The varsity and junior varsity teams had 22 members and the freshmen team had 16 members. The camp captains were Sierra Asbury (freshmen) and Michelle Porter (varsity/JV). Each night, the team was evaluated by the UCA staff and awarded for their performance that evening. Daily awards were presented for achievement, improvement and spirit. They also had the opportunity to be awarded a spirit stick. This is based on enthusiasm and spirit throughout the day. The first evening, the freshmen team received a red ribbon (excellent) and the varsity/JV received a blue ribbon (superior). They needed to perform the cheer that was taught during the day with your own demonstrations, including level changes, jumps, tumbling and peel-offs. The varsity/JV squad was awarded a spirit stick. Both squads received superior ribbons on the second day. They had to perform the Xtreme Routine with an addition to five eight counts of the girls' own material. Both teams got spirit sticks. During the second day, certain girls were chosen to try out for All-Stars. These girls needed to perform the cheer learned on the first day, jump of their choice and the Xtreme Routine. The girls who were chosen to perform were freshmen Julia Persinger, Hailee Horstman, Kayleigh Gilbow, Chloe Hill and Molly Capoun; JV girls Sarah Davis, Alexis Berdine and Allison Dowd; and varsity girls Brittany Kessel, Jaimee Post, Michele Mancino, Porter, Emily Mariani and Osta Atchison. On the final day, an All-Star cheerleader was picked. Both squads received superior ribbons the last day and each squad had the opportunity to try out for Camp Champs, which earned a nomination for the Capital Bowl in Orlando, Fla. There are two categories: cheer and dance. The freshmen placed second out of 11 teams in the cheer and first out of 11 teams in the dance. The varsity/JV placed seventh out of 15 teams in the cheer and sixth out of 14 teams in the dance. Both teams were sent home a spirit stick, a sportsmanship trophy and many other trophies. The freshmen received second place out of five teams and the varsity/JV team placed first out of 12 teams in the Home Dance Routine. The girls who were chosen as All-Stars were Persinger and Davis. They qualified to perform the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade from Nov. 25 through 28. Also chosen were Mariani, Post and Mancino. They qualified to perform in the London New Year's Parade from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2. Both squads qualified to perform in the Capital Bowl Dec. 29 to Jan. 2. Lastly, two seniors, Post and Mancino, were given applications to become a summer camp instructor. The coaches for these squads are Tina Nelman (varsity/JV) and Mandy Kieffer (freshmen). -- From staff reports E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-686-3914 Comments
