The Northern Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross saw a great decrease in blood donations since the Sept. 14 windstorms and is now below minimum inventory levels on seven of the eight blood types. The Red Cross is appealing to the public to donate blood. Other Red Cross regions are also being affected by the hurricane, storms and flooding, with at least 25 blood drive cancellations across the country, causing an 800-unit shortfall in planned collections. Blood is perishable and new donations are needed every day. The Northern Ohio Region serves 57 local hospitals in 19 counties and must collect at least 900 units of blood each day to ensure a sufficient supply. Eligible blood and platelet donors are asked to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit www.RedCrossDonor.org to find a blood drive. Comments
