Write a Will Day is May 12 at Peninsula Library In conjunction with Leave a Legacy and as a service to its patrons, the Peninsula Library Foundation invites patrons to attend Write a Will Day on May 12 from 9 a.m. to 730 p.m. Area attorneys, who are qualified in writing wills, will be available to meet with patrons to write simple wills (assets of less than $338,000 including insurance) for those interested. This service is free but since space is limited an appointment is necessary. Each appointment will be 30 minutes long. Upon registering, participants will be sent a questionnaire to complete and bring with them to their meeting with the attorney. These sessions are strictly confidential. Peninsula Library is located at 6105 Riverview Road. Rowing program begins May 13 Portage Lakes Rowing Association's Learn to Row program starts May 13. The program is Sundays from 7 to 9 a.m. and/or Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. until July 29 at Craftsman's Park, 4450 Rex Lake Drive, Akron. Limited spots open and registration is required. Stow Township's 200th anniversary will be discussed May 14 The Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society will host its monthly meeting on May 14 in the Cuyahoga Falls Library, 2015 Third St. The program will be presented by Mary McClure, who will describe in detail the coming events of the Stow Township 200th anniversary celebration. Cuyahoga Falls was at one time a part of the township. The museum at 2083 Cook St. is open each Monday from 8 a.m. to noon. It is also open the third Sunday of each month, this being May 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. Anyone wishing to visit at any other time or contribute to the museum, call Liz Cross at 330-929-1765. Civil War presentation at Peninsula Library May 14 On May 14, Independence native Dan Rudary will talk to the Cuyahoga Valley Civil War Round Table on "Confederates in the Attic: Observations on the Unfinished Civil War in Richmond, Virginia." The 7:30 p.m. meeting at the Peninsula Library is free and the public is welcome. Now a sophomore majoring in history at University of Richmond, Rudary's historical papers won state awards and sent him to national competitions before he even graduated from high school. An Eagle Scout, Rudary also found time to re-enact as a Confederate soldier with the Company A of the 5th Texas. Rudary will discuss the breaking up of the Museum of the Confederacy, future 150th anniversary celebrations for the War hosted by Virginia, another fight over the Confederate flag at the Virginia statehouse, Robert E. Lee's reputation among contemporary Virginians and the war's latest casualty -- a Civil War weapons collector recently killed by an exploding shell. Community Support Services will host its monthly Board of Directors meeting on May 15 at 150 Cross St., Akron. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and is open to the public. Debora Roznovsky, an area flutist will be offering a flute concert May 18 at 2 p.m. with her students in the gazebo (weather permitting) behind the Peninsula Library, 6105 Riverview Road. The program will feature selections by Handel, Mozart, Gershwin, Gluck, Washington, and traditional pieces by various composers. Everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket. If it rains, the concert will move inside. A day bus trip to Pittsburgh is being planned for July 18. Those who to go on the Three Rivers boat ride, complete with entertainment and a buffet luncheon, should make their reservation now. The cost is $78 and also includes a visit to the Butterfly and Avery Exhibits in Pittsburgh and a ride on the incline Railway trolley. The bus departs the former Tops parking lot on Graham Road at 7:30 a.m. and returns at about 10 p.m. Trip director Mary Lou Ciborek will be in charge of the trip, assisted by June Truax. Colonial Dames group plan spring lunch for May 19 The Ezekial Richardson Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century will have its spring luncheon and meeting May 19 at noon at the Akron Women's City Club, 732 West Exchange St., Akron. Reservations must be made with Mrs. Hugh Erwin Jr. at 122 South Hayden Parkway, Hudson 44236 by May 14. Prospective members and members of Richard Cutting, William Gaylord, John MacKintosh and Hendrick Meese Vrooman Chapters will be special guests at this meeting and will be introduced by Mrs. David Allison, president. Mr. David Allison will present the program "Major General Joseph Warren, American Patriot and Doctor." Allison, a Cuyahoga Falls native and a graduate of the University of Akron, spent his entire career in information technology for Aircraft Braking Systems, formerly known as Goodyear Aerospace. In retirement, he and his wife, Dianne, sell Civil War books, maps, photos and other items at Civil War shows around the country. Colonial Dames is a national, patriotic, heraldric and genealogical organization whose goals are benevolent, charitable and educational. Visiting Nurse Service seeking volunteers Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service is seeking volunteers to assist with important functions at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, and to visit patients in their homes or skilled nursing facilities throughout Summit, Medina, Stark and Portage Counties. Volunteers may lend support at the Hospice Care Center in Fairlawn through visiting patients, answering telephones, filing papers, assembling charts, assisting with mailings, running errands, or arranging flowers, among other activities. Volunteers to visit hospice patients in their homes are also needed, including particular needs for the Hudson, Cuyahoga Falls, Tallmadge and Stow areas. Interests of volunteers are matched with our Hospice program needs. Volunteers receive comprehensive training covering such topics as the physical and emotional needs of patients and caregivers, spiritual aspects of care, the Hospice concept, comfort care issues, communications skills, active listening, and all aspects of death, dying, and grief and bereavement. New volunteers to the program are mentored by seasoned volunteers. Spring volunteer training classes will be May 13 and 20 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Participants can attend either afternoon or evening time classes, but are required to attend both dates. There is no fee. All classes are at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, at 3358 Ridgewood Road in Fairlawn. Calling all Tiger Band alumni All Tiger Band alumni are invited to join this year in the Cuyahoga Falls Memorial Day Parade, May 26. Practice for the parade will be at Cuyahoga Falls High School May 25 at 1 p.m. in the band room. Tubas and drums will be provided only. Parade line-up is at 8 a.m. behind State Road Shopping Center. Village's Community Day event is May 31 The Silver Lake Garden Club will host a Community Day event May 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silver Lake Park next to Village Hall on Kent Road. Appearing speakers will be Bill Barger of the American Conifer Society; Bob Heath of the Akron/Canton Bonsai Society; and Megan Vance, Master Gardener. For the children there will be a "Make & Take" project throughout the day, sponsored by the Junior Garden Club. Herbs and annuals will be for sale, as well as the Garden Club members' donated perennials, with the proceeds to benefit a community project. Mayor Bernie Hovey and Council members, as well as several organizations and group representatives, are planning to attend to inform on related community activities, plans and events and to answer questions. All villagers are invited to this event to get to know their neighbors, get informed on upcoming village happenings/events and learn about new methods for planting and maintaining a beautiful garden. Cuyahoga Falls Travel Club plans events The Cuyahoga Falls Travel Club announces the following trips (All journeys depart from Quirk Cultural Center, 1201 Grant Ave.) Participants do not have to be a member of the travel club to go on the trips.
