Northminster Presbyterian Church Northminster Presbyterian Church, 104 W. Portage Trail Extension, has participated for several years in the national program which collects dollars for the hungry on the Sunday of the National Football League Super Bowl. Northminster will again participate Feb. 3. On Super Bowl Sunday, Sunday School children will collect money in soup pots as the Northminster congregation exist and the proceeds will benefit, "Feed My Sheep," a Friday soup kitchen located at Redeemer Methodist Church on North Hill in Akron, where several Northminster members volunteer. The church will be observing the Lenten season beginning on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. A bread and broth simple meal will be served, followed by a videotape by Amy Jo Levine. The church will then have a discussion led by member Carol Pocock. A bread and broth simple meal and program will take place every Wednesday during Lent, ending March 12. Northminster will kick off its 2008 All You Can Eat spaghetti dinners Feb. 8. The cost will be $7, which includes spaghetti, salad, pie, bread and a drink. Dinner will be served on the following Fridays: Feb. 8, March 14, April 11 and May 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be a Maundy Thursday service on March 20 at 7 p.m., with communion by intinction. The Rev. Dr. Joseph W. Atkins Jr. will be the pastor for that service. Good Friday will be observed with an opportunity for quiet meditation in the sanctuary from 1 to 3 p.m. There will be a meditation guide available to participants. Northminster sponsors a non-denominational Christian youth club, the Pioneers, which gathers at 6 p.m. Thursdays for fun, learning, crafts, music and snacks. St. John's Episcopal Church will host a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner on Feb. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets for adults are $4 and children ages 12 and under are free. The church is at the corner of Second Street and Portage Trail in Cuyahoga Falls. First United
A pancake breakfast will take place on Feb. 3 at First United Methodist Church, 245 Portage Trail, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Wesley Hall. The breakfast is sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 152 at the church and features sausage, all the pancakes an attendee can eat, orange juice and other beverages. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 5-12 and free for 4 and under. The church will recognize Troop 152's 93 consecutive years of scouting during worship that day. Proceeds from the breakfast support their projects. Weekday Christian Preschool at the church will be taking registrations for the 2008-09 school year starting Feb. 4 at 9 a.m. in Asbury Hall at the church. The preschool offers morning and afternoon classes on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays for children ages 3,4 and 5 years old. The program is part of the Going Strong meeting and is presented by Lincoln impersonator Pete Raymond of Wooster. Mr. Raymond is a life member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters which includes 170 portrayers of Lincoln from 35 states making presentations in first person, dressed in Lincoln-era attire. Grace Summit Community Church Grace Summit Community Church, 2960 Bailey Road in Cuyahoga Falls will host a casual community coffee house evening with coffee, pastries, games and live music on Feb. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. Contact the church with questions at 330-922-3550. United Presbyterian Church Pastor Ross Slaughter continues with his series on modern day discipleship by taking a close up look at the Apostle John in a message entitled: "I saw Heaven Opened." The WNA Puppet Ministry will be featured for the Children's Message this week and the Cherub Choir, made up of the young children of the congregation, will be singing at both services. UPC is participating in the "Souper Bowl of Caring" food drive this year. Those coming to worship are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item. The final collection day is Feb. 3. On Feb. 5, the church is launching a new prayer ministry called "PrayerLab," a chance to come to pray and to be prayed for. Anyone can come to the church sanctuary between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday Night Alive! runs from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. with a family-style supper at 6 p.m. More information can be obtained from the church's Web site for a full description of course offerings. First United Methodist Church of Akron First United Methodist Church of Akron, 263 E. Mill St. (parking and entrance in rear of building), will have Lenten fish dinners Feb. 8, Feb. 29 and March 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. The price is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 12. Tickets can be purchased through the church office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at the door. The church will host a combined Ash Wednesday Service on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. The congregations from Church of the Good Shepherd and Church of the Master United Methodist Churches will join First United Methodist Church of Akron for the Lenten service that will include Communion and Imposition of Ashes. Winter is not slowing up the activities at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 130 Broad Blvd. in Cuyahoga Falls. Sunday mornings offer several ways to serve and worship God beginning with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Children may attend the L.I.G.H.T. (Learning in God's House Together) programs presented by Marilyn Freeman, Pilgrim's Christian Education Director. Adults may choose between two different ways to study God's words. Discussion and coffee are offered in the Pilgrim Library or adults may go to the Heritage Room for coffee and quiet meditation. The first Sunday after Easter, a third choice for adults will be added to the Sunday morning format. A new book group is forming. During the first session they will begin discussing "Yes, Lord I have Sinned But I Have Several Excellent Excuses," by James Moore. Interested people may call the church to sign up for the group. Worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Pilgrim sanctuary and is followed by a social hour in the social hall. On Feb. 3, Pilgrim's Pastor, the Rev. Kirk Bruce, will be joined in the pulpit by his father, the Rev. Jack Bruce. Pastor Jack Bruce's birthday will be celebrated during the social hour. Ash Wednesday, Feb. 6, will be celebrated with a soup and salad supper at 6:30 p.m. followed by a worship service with communion. Pilgrim's singles group for ages 30 -65, meets the second Sunday evening of every month at 6 p.m. On Feb. 10, the singles will enjoy pizza and salad as they meet and mingle. This is a non-denominational group. A new session of the Beginners Bible Study starts Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. in the Pilgrim Library. Biblical themes, such as water is the symbol of chaos, will be the topic. Pilgrim is sponsoring a four-part series, "Living with Money" beginning Feb. 17. Each one-hour session will begin after Sunday worship and will include a light lunch, a 20-minute video and a discussion. Interested people may call the church to register for this series. Bethany United Church of Christ, 1235 Broad Blvd., announces the following programs and services: Feb. 3 begins "Women's Week" in the United Church of Christ. In recognition of the crucial role women play in the life of Bethany Church and in the wider church, Sharon Alberson and Mary Seymour are coordinating worship led by Bethany women at both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Bring a can of soup Feb. 3 as the church turns Super Bowl Sunday into "Soup"er Bowl Sunday. The congregation is hoping to fill the back pew of the church with cans of soup to send to the food pantry of Good Neighbors.
