Cuyahoga Falls -- Cuyahoga Falls Police and Summit County officials are investigating a motorcycle crash on southbound Route 8 south of Graham Road that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Akron man June 20.

The victim is listed as Richard O. Hopkins Jr., according to a Falls Police report.

As of press time June 22, Gary Guenther, chief investigator for the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office, said his office had not yet performed an autopsy on the victim.

"[It's] just a tragic event for the young man's family," added Falls Police Chief Jack Davis.

Falls Police and Fire officials responded to the crash at 4:16 p.m. June 20, where, according to a police department press release, Hopkins "lost control of his motorcycle striking the median and a light pole where he was ejected into the northbound side of [Route 8] next to the median."

Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the press release.

The inside and middle lanes were closed on both the northbound and southbound sides of Route 8 for about four hours following the crash, according to police. This led to congestion on nearby roads such as Wyoga Lake, Portage Trail, Broad Boulevard and Steels Corners Road, said Davis.

The crash remains under investigation by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office, The Summit County Metro Crash Team and Falls Police.
