CUYAHOGA FALLS -- "I think the people see the importance of a strong school district and the importance of their kids going to school in a good community that has a school district that's good like ours."

That's what Jake Ricker, co-chairman of the levy committee, had to say after voters in the Falls City School District passed a renewal levy May 2.

With all 36 precincts reporting, the Cuyahoga Falls City School District renewal levy request was approved 2,040 (76.32 percent)-633 (23.68 percent), according to final, but unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections.

The district sought passage of Issue 12, a five-year, 4.75-mill operating levy renewal for current expenses. This levy, which expires at the end of the year, was first approved in 2002, and renewed in 2007 and 2012.

Having a strong school district "helps property values," Ricker added. "I was very pleased to see that passed."

'We are definitely happy that the renewal passed, and by a significant margin," said committee co-chair Matt Weiss, "and we want to thank the voters. We hope and need to have the continued support of the community."

The issue will continue generating $3.3 million per year for operating costs for the district's general fund. The levy costs a home valued at $100,000 $140.49 per year ($136.59 annually if the home is owner-occupied).

The levy pays for expenses such as salaries and benefits, supplies, contract services, equipment, transportation and maintenance.

In a voice message sent to phones on the district's automated call list, Cuyahoga Falls City School District Superintendent Dr. Todd Nichols thanked parents and voters for their support. "We will continue to make choices intended to maximize opportunities while maintaining fiscal responsibility," he said.
