Michael Shearer has been named editor of the Record-Courier and Regional Editor of GateHouse Media, Northeast Ohio.
In that capacity he will direct the print and digital news operations of seven daily newspapers and numerous weekly newspapers, including the Cuyahoga Falls News-Press.
His office will be in Kent, where he will also take up the role of general manager. His first day on the job will be April 3.
"Readers of the Record-Courier can expect to see a greater focus on our digital products and stories that focus on the people of this community. I'm a big believer that a community newspaper has a role to ask questions, on behalf of readers, of the leaders in the community and to share those answers in a professional manner," Shearer said.
Former Record-Courier Editor Roger Di Paolo has left the company after more than 40 years. Former General Manager Ron Waite, who had previously announced that he had taken a new position in another market, is also leaving the company. Brad Harmon, president of Central US Publishing Operation, thanked them for "their many years of distinguished service" in a statement to GateHouse employees on Thursday.
The eight daily markets also include the Daily Record in Wooster, the Alliance Review, Ashland Times-Gazette, the Daily Jeffersonian in Cambridge, the Canton Repository, Massillon Independent and the Dover/New Philadelphia Times-Reporter.
Before joining GateHouse, Shearer was executive editor of Gannett's Media Network of Central Ohio, 10 daily newspapers and websites that include the Mansfield News-Journal, Newark Advocate and Zanesville Times-Recorder. While there, he worked to coordinate local enterprise stories using a statewide network of reporters -- something readers can expect to see in the future.
"The whole goal is to maximize the power of local journalism by being smart about how we share content," he said. "It's about doing what's best for the whole community."
Shearer is a graduate of the journalism program at Ohio University and has worked in Ohio his entire career. He was city editor in Mansfield, then managing editor in Newark where The Advocate placed in five consecutive Ohio Associated Press "General Excellence" awards as one of the best newspapers in the state in its circulation class.
Shearer and his family are looking for a home in the Kent area.
