Members of the Cuyahoga Falls Firefighters Union had their biggest year yet in their fundraising efforts to aid in the fight against muscular dystrophy, according to Pat Hayden, a firefighter and medic with the department.
"Like many fire departments, we do a Fill the Boot campaign each year to benefit MDA, the very long-running, established charity of professional firefighters," said Hayden, who is the Muscular Dystrophy Association coordinator for Cuyahoga Falls Firefighters, IAFF Local 494.
"This year is our largest annual amount ever collected and donated by the Cuyahoga Falls Firefighters," Hayden said. "The total donation is $22,307.69." For the past two years, the union was able to donate around $21,000 each year, he noted, adding, " but before that time frame we were only able to collect and donate $1,000 to $2,500 each year."
This year's donation check is the accumulation of cash collected in boots from concert patrons at Blossom Music Center prior to the shows, he said. Donations were also collected one night at an IROK Friday concert in Cuyahoga Falls.
"We want to say 'thank you' to the people who donated to Fill the Boot," Hayden said.
