A Cuyahoga Falls woman died Aug. 11 after Akron Police say she and an Akron man were assaulted by two men and one woman that same day in the man's Brittain Road apartment.
Melody Ann Tomey, 55, of Cuyahoga Falls, was pronounced dead at 2:53 a.m. Aug. 11 in the emergency department at Akron City Hospital, according to Summit County Medical Examiner Chief Investigator Gary Guenther.
"The cause of death is pending toxicology testing and further police investigation," said Guenther.
Two black men and a black woman entered an apartment unit on Brittain Road at 12:35 a.m. Aug. 11, and allegedly pistol whipped Ms. Tomey and a 40-year-old man who was a resident of the apartment, and took money, phones and a tablet, according to an Akron Police report. The trio then fled the scene.
Ms. Tomey and the man declined EMS services, according to the police report, and Ms. Tomey was allowed to lie down in a bedroom while officers interviewed the man.
"While officers were inside the cruiser working on the report, Melody Tomey became unresponsive," the police report stated.
Ms. Tomey was transported to Akron City Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to the medical examiner.
All three suspects were described as wearing black clothing with a black bandana, according to the report. The female suspect is described as 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 and weighing 160 to 180 pounds. No further description of the two male suspects was provided in the report.
A 30-year-old Akron woman who is listed as a resident of the apartment unit, was not at the apartment when police arrived, but was found at a nearby business, brought back to the apartment building and then taken to the detective bureau. She was not injured, according to the police report.
