Update: Official says body found in creek is missing Akron boy; funeral arrangements announced

The body that was discovered in Mud Brook in Akron on Sunday, July 14 has been positively identified as Nicholas L. Shaffer, a 12 year-old boy from Hemlock Hills Drive in Akron, according to Gary Guenther, chief investigator for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities searching for the 12-year-old boy who disappeared in a rain-swollen creek found a body believed to be his the morning of July 14. The boy went missing July 11 after falling or jumping off a wall and into the creek while sitting with his mother behind their home in the Timber Top Apartments complex, which straddles the Akron-Cuyahoga Falls line.
Calling hours will be Thursday, July 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ciriello and Carr Fairlawn Chapel at 39 S. Miller Road, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19, the Rev. Karen Biggerstaff officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woodridge School District special needs program in care of the funeral home.
