Former Kent State men's basketball player John Collver (left), who turned 90 on Feb. 27, stands with current Golden Flashes men's basketball head coach Rob Senderoff. Collver played for KSU from 1948-50 and is one of three remaining surviving members of the 1948-50 men's basketball teams. He stays in touch with the other two: Bill Cox, 95, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Bill Bertka , 90, of Los Angeles, Calif. The KSU basketball team presented Collver with a signed basketball on Jan. 17. Following his college playing days, Collver played five years for the Goodyear Wingfoots in the National Industrial Basketball League. Collver graduated from Akron North High School. During World War ll John served aboard a United States Navy aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. While at Kent State John was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He is a retiree of General Electric, and he currently lives in Akron. Collver, along with his wife Dora (Ruckel) Collver, who died in 2008, have four children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
