The rehearsal studio

at the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet was a symphony of bright colors, a contrast to the winter gray outside, as the dancers insides the studio had a dress rehearsal for “Miss Spider’s Tea Party.”

The ballet will be staged at the Akron Civic Theatre March 16 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and March 17 at 2:30 p.m. The ballet troupe also will perform the world premiere of Tom Gold’s Joplin Jamboree.

“Miss Spider’s Tea Party” is based on the children’s story by David Kirk, said Mary Mitchell of the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet. In the story, Miss Spider wants to invite the other insects to a tea party, but they flee at the sight of her. Then a wet moth, who cannot fly away, is stunned by Miss Spider’s hospitality and tells the others about Miss Spider’s kindness.

“Even the number of insects mentioned in the book is followed,” Mitchell said. “We have three fireflies, four bees, six ants, seven butterflies and so on.”

There is much to enjoy for children and their families, such as the colorful butterflies, the fireflies (the costumes have lights that light up in the back), the marching red ants, the eclectic rubber bugs and more.

Tickets range from $10 to $25, with group rates available. Call 330-524-3400 or visit www.cvyb.org for details.
